Volkswagen indian small car – the UP!

1) Much expected Volkswagen small car concept is finally unveiled in the first day of 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. The small car is named UP!(the exclamation mark really is part of the car’s name) and is a clear and strong statement for future Volkswagen design according to Volkswagen.lets look into the relevance for the Indian automotive industry. This concept car UP! will be the used by Volkswagen to build its indian small car. Here is the official words Volkswagen CEO & chairman of the board Martin Winterkorn told, “We will manufacture Up! for emerging markets like India, Russia and China.” India is an important market for us, he added. Volkswagen India which recently launched its first locally-assembled Passat sedan is serious on the Indian market. It is already believed Volkswagen will roll out a premium C-segment sedan Jetta and a premium small car(possibly the Polo bluemotion). Volkswagen is building a plant in Pune which would have a capacity of 1,10,000 cars per annum. Volkswagen will build this UP! small car in this new plant. Though the plant will be ready by 2009, the up is expected to hit the indian showrooms in late 2010 or in early 2011.

2) Volkswagen up! is part of the company’s program which aims at reviving by going back to its roots and concentrating its efforts on producing volume selling models with wide customer appeal. The new up! symbolises a dramatic turnaround after Volkswagen’s recent flirtation with the luxury car segment. Unlike the modern Beetle which costs about $30,000, this small city car up! will be affordable. Volkswagen Up! will come in two distinct versions: a contemporary city car carrying all of today’s usual creature comforts for established markets and a more basic low-cost version for emerging markets. Volkswagen new small car up! will cost about 6,000 euros (Rs 3,30,000) for Indian customers while it would be sold for a10,000 euros (Rs 5,50,000) in Europe. In india the up! will be positioned in the segment which is currently dominated by Maruti Suzuki’s Alto and Hyundai’s Santro.

3) Volkswagen is back to the history, yes! the new up! features a rear engine. A new range of ultra-frugal direct-injection petrol powerplants which includes a new turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit and turbocharged 900cc two-cylinder will power the small car. Similar to the engine found in the Polo BlueMotion, a new 1.4-cylinder engine is under developement for the new up! . Since the Up! is likely to fall below 1000kg, Volkswagen hopes delivering up to 30 km per litre (kpl) with the new up!, the company hopes to extend to 33 kpl and beyond. The power output could vary from 70 bhp to 90 bhp.

volkswagen-up-india-rear.jpg

4) Volkswagen up! is the first product of the Volkswagen’s ‘new small family’, or NSF concept. VW will reveal two further superminis based on the same rear-engined layout NSF concept in the upcoming tokyo and los angeles auto show. Small car up’s wheelbase is as long as the Polo (volkswagen premium small car). At 3450mm long and 1630mm wide, the Up! is 45mm less than the Maruti Suzuki’s alto. But Volkswagen engineers say they have managed to liberate 200 mm in length by placing the engine at the rear, and still provide as much or more space than other cars in its class. Infact Volkswagen’s up is of similar size to the new Fiat 500. The up! concept, features a rear tailgate section constructed entirely out of a transparent material, containing a glowing Volkswagen roundel. Volkswagen’s classic badgeplate in the rear will light up when the tail lamps are in operation.

volkswagen-up-concept-frankfurt-india.jpg

5) VW says the up! is capable of carrying four adults, due to each of the four wheels being pushed as far into the corners as possible. Each of the individual, lightweight passenger seats features inflatable pockets to maximise comfort and can be folded and removed from the vehicle if necessary in order for larger loads to be carried. By positioning the engine and other components low down at the rear UP! makes an appreciable amount of cargo space under the stubby bonnet up front and over the engine at the rear. The Up! should be the most recyclable Volkswagen ever built, VW recently teaming up with recyclable materials expert SiCon with the aim of making future cars 95 percent reusable.

Preview on Bajaj XCD 125cc DTS-SI

bajaj-xcd-125-dts-si.jpg XCD debuts..

Bajaj Auto on September 9th(as announced) launched its new 125 CC, DTS-Si engine-powered ‘Xceed’, priced at Rs 41,000 (ex-showroom). Bajaj bets the new bike will deliver the fuel efficiency of a 100cc bike combined with the performance of a 150cc one. Bajaj has incorporated some of features found in the 150cc bike in this new XCD 125cc. Lets welcome the new XCD!

XCD’s styling and Engineering:

Similar to other Bajaj bikes, XCD is contemporary, stylish and is equipped with hi-fi features. Bajaj XCD the wide black visor, clear lens indicator, 5 spoke alloy wheels. Adding to this conventional sweet features is the new larger headlamp which is mounted lower than conventional setup for aggressive posing. The twin pilot lamps with unique prismatic treatment on outer lens enhances the look. Similar to the gladiator, Bajaj new XCD comes with scoops on each side which partly covers the not so wider fuel tank. From the side, the flowing lines makes the XCD 125cc DTS-SI more dynamic. XCD’s body coloured SNS spring(inner spring) instead of orange offered in other Bajaj products paves way for the flow. The lines converge at the rear to a smaller triangular tail lamp

XCD 125cc DTS-SI features:

* XCD comes with electric start but doesn’t have the disc brake

* XCD 125cc DTS-SI features larger headlamp with prismatic pilot lamps

* XCD is the first 125cc bike to be launched with digital console – a microprocessor built into the speedometer assembly processes information from the wheel speed. For night time usage, the LCD screen has an orange backlight with features in black. With this 135cc discover and platina are the only products which are barred of this Bajaj’s LCD console. Soon to be launched TVS 125cc flame has a similar console

* Another first in the XCD 125cc is the LED taillight which is only available in performance bikes. Bajaj is bringing its value added products to the 125cc segment.

* With the new XCD 125cc DTS-SI, bajaj introduces a new technology for which it has applied for patent. XCD features a flexible number plate mechanism instead of conventional rigid plate. Through this new mechanism XCD’s number plate swings to and fro which enables the bike to have a lower than conventional front fairing which will enable aggressive stance for the bike at anytime according to Bajaj

*XCD adapts the industry standard wider rear tyre at the rear

* easier maneuverability with this new XCD due to reduced wheelbase(1265mm in XCD and 1305mm in discover) but this reduction might have an impact on bike’s stability

* XCD 125cc DTS-SI features handlebar weights(black colour) to control vibrations

Bajaj phases out 110cc & 125cc Discover:

Bajaj, which stopped the production of Discover 110cc in August has now decided to phase out its Discover 125. With this discover 135cc is the only member in the discover family under production. However Bajaj will continue to produce Platina’s as long as there is a demand for it. Though, Bajaj is setting international standard(new platform in every 2 years) by phasing out one of its best selling models its rival Hero Honda is able to sell 4 models in 100cc segment and 3 models in 125cc segment. Is bajaj jumping to the gun? will it lead to loss of customer’s credibility? yes, somewhat in India on an average a bike is owned for 3-5yrs(approximately 40000km) if the company phases out the model within this period how will he/she react. Definitely not a positive move atleast in the present condition. Bajaj’s another peer TVS too phased out its 150cc apache while launching apache RTR

Betting big on XCD:

Bajaj will produce 20,000 units this month, which would be hiked to about 50,000 units a month by October. This will make the XCD the third most produced bike in India.
Bajaj which has been the victim of slumping sales and lower margin expects to derive a profit margin of about Rs 3,000 on each XCD 125cc DTS-SI.

Bajaj – Kawasaki:

Bajaj has spent almost three years to develop this XCD with design expertise from its technical partner, Kawasaki. Bajaj is in talks with Kawasaki for technology alliance. The duo is on the verge of announcing a joint mega development venture. It is believed Bajaj is working with Kawasaki to develop an innovative technology for one of its future products. Rajiv Bajaj said that a ‘unique’ technology that is a global Kawasaki patent would be used on some future products.

Bajaj which plans to develop bigger, faster and technologically advanced bikes in alliance with Kawasaki will compete with Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki not just in India but also in East Asia and other places. In recent years, Bajaj Auto has entered a number of other large foreign markets like Indonesia, Nigeria and Iran. The company has also further enhanced its presence in Sri Lanka, Egypt, Columbia and Mexico. Bajaj has been scouting for a partner in china for a long time where it sources alloy wheels for its products. “We will enter China at the right time when we find a right partner,” Bajaj said.

more products..

Bajaj will launch a few more products based on the Exceed platform and will continue focus on the ungeared scooter segment where it may launch a high-powered sporty
scooterette, Blade, by 2008. “We will now focus on bigger, faster and technologically advanced bikes,” said Rajiv Bajaj

Crash test to become mandatory for indian cars
Similar to European Union and US, India is going to make a mandatory crash test for vehicles.  The ministry of road transport and highways has finalised the draft ‘automotive industry standards’ for the new crash tests (frontal crash and frontal off-set and side-on impact crash safety tests), is now awaiting adequate testing facilities.Once these necessary infrastructure is made, crash test will become mandatory. The testing facilities will be set up at ARAI in Pune and the different centres of NATRIP. The government of India is aligning itself with the standards of Economic Commission of Europe on these safety tests. These safety norms may come into effect by 2008-end or early 2009, will result in phasing out of vehicles not meeting them.  Maruti 800, Esteem, Versa, Omni, Ford Ikon, Tata indica and the half-a-century-old Ambassador, in their present form, are likely to fail the proposed crash tests. Crash tests are meant to check if a vehicle moving at 40 km per hour breaks fully without harming passengers.  Currently, the steering-impact test and the seat-belt anchorage test are mandatory. These are far lighter than the international norm where cars have to undergo frontal, frontal-off set and side-on impact crash safety tests before being launched.

Volkswagen passat is here!

Volkswagen Passat:

The first Passat rolled off the assembly line at Volkswagen’s Emden plant was 32 years ago. Since then, the Passat has become the most successful Volkswagen model after the Golf and Beetle. Over 13 million cars have been produced since 1973. The biggest markets in Europe are Germany, Italy, France and the UK. ThoughVolkswagen phantom and touareg are already being imported and sold here, passat which makes its debut in India on september 05 is the volkswagen’s first official launch. But this too is virtual, wonder how? skoda superb is already here which is nothing but the 2002 volkswagen passat. Let’s welcome the passat!

Engine and Powertrain:

Volkswagen passat is developed on a larger jetta(a midsize sedan soon to be launched in india) platform and the engine is mounted transversely. Passat is powered by the state-of-the-art 2.0 TDI diesel engine which produces 103 kW at 4 000 rpm while it has a maximum torque figure of 320 Nm which is available at 1750 rpm. Team the 2.0-litre TDI with the revolutionary DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) and youll have a very satisfying ride. This uses a sequential manual gearbox in order to ensure efficiency and rapid responses, but it also uses a clever twin clutch system to ensure creamy smoothness. Engage first gear and the gearbox will pre-engage second gear in advance, the second clutch engaging as soon as you flick up to fire the Passat instantly into second gear. This means a seamless flow of power. The electronics predict what gear you are about to engage, depending on whether youre accelerating or braking, and the result is astonishing, making every other gearbox look distinctly clunky. The other option is to slip it into D and drive it like a normal automatic. The average consumption of the 2.0l TDI saloon is claimed to be 14.7kpl. The 2.0l TDI passat is claimed to accelerate from nought to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 204 km/h (201 km/h).

Pumpe Deuse – Volkswagen’s diesel:

Volkswagen is one of the largest passenger diesel producer and a diesel technology leader with the TDI engine. “TDI” stands for Turbo Direct Injection, meaning that not only is the engine’s intake air compressed by a turbocharger for greater efficiency, the fuel is injected separately and directly into each cylinder at the appropriate time. Sophisticated mechanical and electronic systems control the amount and timing of each fuel charge for maximum power output with minimum emissions. But direct injection as done by previous TDI engines has been improved upon with the new engines. They use “Pumpe Deuse” (PD) technology developed in conjunction with Bosch Corporation. Translated to English, this means “unit injectors” – the injection pump, controls, and injector for each cylinder are in one unit, and there is one unit injector per cylinder. The injection pumps are driven off the camshaft. The design is extremely compact and precise. Fuel efficiency is related to the degree of atomization of the fuel before combustion. The higher the pressure of injection, the smaller the droplets of fuel, and the more complete the combustion – leading to increased power and decreased emissions. Early diesels, in the 1930s, injected fuel at 5,000 pounds per square inch (psi). The PD injectors inject fuel at over 29,000 psi. All this makes the Volkswagen’s Passat to meet the stringent Euro4 emissions standard.

Design and engineering:

Similar to skoda cousins, volkswagen passat will be noted for its engineering but how it differs from skoda is through its innovative style. Passat’s has wedge shaped front which is facilated by a wide bonnet and chrome-plated shield-shaped grille. The wraparound headlamps,17 inch alloy wheels, ORVM integrted indicators and elliptical roof gives the passat a necessary stylish phenomenon. The real attraction is in the rear – the wrapaorund twin LED tail lamp gels neatly with the large boot. Passat’s boot is truly large it can hold 565-litre (with a full-size spare wheel) hence more stowage space.

The bodywork is impressively stiff which means for you in real terms that this car is torsionally quiet, with an all-round chassis rigidity that allows the suspension to do its work more effectively. The end result is a more comfortable ride and better performance through corners. New production techniques were brought into play to get this result, including a far greater use of laser-welded seams and a hardened steel that adds stiffness and safety to the structure. The electrohydraulic rack-and-pinion steering is said to be little bit stiff and meaty but passat’s bi-Xenon headlights with the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) will be very useful at night, as not only do the headlights swivel with the steering to illuminate the road ahead even around corners, but auxiliary cornering lights cover what are too often blind spots to the side with bright light in sharp turns, such as into a driveway. The suspension is through MacPherson struts in front and the independent four-link setup in the rear.More use of aluminum reduces unsprung weight and provides improved response. It also isolates passat’s occupants from road shocks to a higher degree, appropriate to its more upscale position.

The new Passat dashboard uses a floating design, a clever illusion produced by a distinct separation and color change between the top and the bottom. Passat’s leather-covered multi-function steering wheel enables you to operate the radio and the multi-function display of your Passat during the journey without taking your hands from the wheel. If you choose a double-clutch gearbox DSG, the steering wheel can be ordered with a Triptronic function too.The glove box is barely medium-size but there are generous door pockets and some other fascia compartments. Though not equivalent to mercedes c class, passat’s rear leg room is good and head room fair. Both the console box and the glove box are large what’s special is both are air conditioned.

Safety and Special features:

In the front passat features big vented discs and it uses solid discs in back. Three novel features in the Passat’s braking – disc brakes are provided with an intermittent wipe function that swipes the discs dry in the rain which ensures you have a good control even in rainy seasons.New electric parking brake which gets activated at the push of a button and is released automatically when you drive away and this means Passat pulls away smoothly. When stopping at traffic lights or on a slope, the electric parking brakes with hill hold control prevents the car from rolling back – a highly convenient safety boost. Standard electronic chassis aids include ABS, electronic stability, brake assist, and an electronic differential lock. The front airbags appear in the form of a dual-phase design system. This means that the intensity of their response will be driven entirely by the force of the collision. The passenger airbag can be switched off to allow smaller passengers in child seats to travel in front, this independent of the dual system.

* Instead of a traditional key, Passat’s smart key, which incorporates the remote-lock, remote-unlock, and trunk-release functions, requires just placing it in a dashboard slot and pressing to start the engine.

* Passat has an innovative feature called “coming home” / “leaving home” feature which makes sure you are always comfortable when entering or leaving the vehicle during darkness. Passat’s remote control key activates the dipped beam headlights and the interior lighting, illuminating the area around the car. This means that the way to your front door, for example, is always well lit.

* Volkswagen passat offers 12-way front seats with integral adjustable lumbar support (standard feature in top version). Their longitudinal position, height, seat back and seat angle can all be adjusted electrically. The intelligent memory function remembers your personal seat and mirror settings.

* Passat’s sliding/tilting glass roof is operated via a rotary switch in the headlining. An integral positioning option can be set to control how far the roof is to be opened or tilted. No longer you have to care about the accidental insertion of body parts passat offers a highly sensitive electronic power limiter stops the roof as soon as it encounters the resistance.

* Volkswagen Passat’s navigation system, with its bright LCD provides good visibility. Destination entry is by direct alphanumeric entry or by a location on the map, and it is possible to get directions to various secondary destinations near the primary destination. Well-marked context-sensitive keys next to the screen facilitate its use. When a destination is chosen, directions are read through the audio system and displayed not only via a highlighted route on the map but also on the Volkswagen Information System (VIS) trip-computer screen between the tach and the speedometer, directly in front of the driver. The VIS, controlled from buttons on the right steering-wheel spoke, controls and displays information on fuel economy, distance, compass data, and vehicle-convenience settings. When nav-system route guidance is in effect, the regular VIS functions are unavailable. With the Passat’s navigation system installed, the optional CD changer is used for audio entertainment. It too is controlled simply and logically by the context-sensitive buttons to the side of the screen.

Passat’s price and colours:

The fifth generation Passat is imported to India via CKD(Completely Knocked Down) unit and hence it has been priced at Rs 22.35 lakh and Rs 24.35 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Passat will be available in two versions in six colours. Currently 8,000-10,000 units per annum of this executive D segment cars is sold in india and the segment is ruled by Toyota’s Camry, Honda’s Accord, Nissan Teana and skoda superb. Volkswagen doesn’t seems to worry about the cannibalisation!

Skoda superb vs Volkswagen passat:

Skoda Superb available in India is older than the new passat and priced higher than the new passat – Rs 26.5 lakhs(ex-showroom,Delhi), the superb is powered by a 2.5L TDI engine

Volkswagen’s dealer network and its plans:

TVS scooty Teenz Electric:

Our earlier article electric vehicles(EV’s) in india cited the lack of major players in electric vehicle segment as the major cause for its low reach. TVS has been hinting its interest on alternative fuels, in 2004 Delhi auto show TVS showcased a concept electric vehicle with a 48-V battery, has a range of 100 km per charge with a charging time of eight hours. Now TVS is ready to enter production of electric vehicles.

India’s third largest manufacturer TVS forays into the rapidly growing electric market through its scooty teenz electric. The Scooty Teenz electric vehicle is built on the same platform as the earlier two-stroke version of the Teenz and it will will come in three motor power variants. Similar to other players in the Industry this Teenz Electric also feature an imported electric motor. Even though TVS will wipe out our concern of bad dealer network that is associated with other players. Our other concerns such expensive spare parts(also the vehicle) and problems with electrical kits(often requires replacement) will continue to exist since TVS too import spare parts. The company says “The electric scooter would make a two-wheeler affordable to own and run for the school-girl or housewife even in small towns. It has the build quality and reliability that TVS is known for,”

Scooty teenz electric which is powered by 800W motor is expected to reach a top speed of 40 kph and would be capable of a maximum range of 50 km per charge. Scooty Teenz electric can be fully charged by plugging it into a household power socket for four hours.

TVS plans to roll out a hybrid version of scooty next year. TVS also plans to roll out the CNG version of its two-wheelers in january 2008.

While the TVS competetiors not yet relieved from the RTR shock, TVS has added another flavour to its apache. The long awaited fuel injection(FI) engine for Apache RTR 160 is finally here. The Apache RTR 160 FI is the third bike to get this innovative technology after Hero Honda glamour FI and Pulsar 220cc FI.

Because of the new electronic fuel injection, the new Apache RTR 160 FI develops 15.7bhp (0.8bhp less than the pulsar 180cc). The new EFI(Electronic Fuel Injection) technology employs an electronic control unit that is combined with sensors, a fuel pump and a main injector. The EFI technology will offer the beast the not only the necessary power and performance but also make the cold starting easily(cold starting is the prominent issue with TVS products). You can also expect the gentle release in power which enables the smoother acceleration, minimal power loss while shifting gears in the new apache RTR 160 FI. The additional advantage with the fuel injection technology is you can hold on the apache RTR FI near its top speed. The new Apache RTR 160 FI can reach a top speed of 121 kmph(3kmph more than the carburetted apache RTR). While pricing has not been announced, this variant is expected to be about Rs 5,000 more compared with the non-EFI model.
