Pininfarina to launch electric car in India

Pininfarina an italian design and contract manufacturing firm is planning to launch an electric car in India. Pininfarina has been in the news for sometime in India. Since Tata is said to be eyeing a stake in the firm. Last year, Pininfarian announced it plans to develop and manufacture its own electric car. Pininfarina’s car will be 100% electric and therefore it will not produce any carbon emissions. Pininfarina’s electric car will have four seats and will be equipped with a battery that will provide it with a range of around 250km in city driving. According to Pinifarina, the battery would give an exceptionally long life. The battery which powers the Pininfarina’s car would be able to run for more than 200,000 km. The Pininfarina electric car will do zero to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds and have a top speed of 130km/h. Pininfarina has big plans for this car and expects to build 15,000 a year – or more if there’s enough demand. But unfortunately this electric car won’t hit the Indian shores any time soon. Pininfarina will start selling the electric car in Europe, the United States and Japan beginning by 2010. Pininfarina would launch the electric car in the Indian by 2014. “After the launch of the electric car in the European market, it will be marketed in the US. Then we will evaluate the demand for the car from other markets too, including India, and will launch accordingly,” Pininfarina SpA Chairman and Managing Director Andrea Pininfarina said. “It (the launch) can be before 2014 also. As soon as we achieve our target of selling 15,000 units of the electric car, we will evaluate other potential markets, including India,” Pininfarina added.
