The race getting hot with Renault in India

Among the global car players in India, Renault has drafted a well-defined strategy to mean its business here. It has fueled its plants for launching 5 new models before 2013. For this purpose, the Chennai plant is getting a revived vigor to meet the ensuing increase in retail network. Renault intends to gain much even from every minute, as evidenced from the remarks of the company’s CEO, and other top officials. For Renault, India is a most important country, which is proved that even China has been sidelined in priority. It is to be remembered that China has the potential of 7 times more than India in automobile field. Renault is now much relieved from the hiccups it had with the JV from M&M for Logan. The Logan episode taught a lot to Renault and now the focus is mainly on the future, the official said. The top priority will be for providing its cars with what customers seek, fulfilling the concept of local solutions to local problems.

The JV with Nissan will be able to deliver 4 lakh units by 2015 from its Chennai plant, whereas Nissan’s improved efforts indicate that the target may get its due early by a year. Nissan is riding high on the European markets and the need forces to increase the production in another two years. Renault ascertained that it will be able to roll out Koleos and Fluence in 2011. The tone of contention between Nissan and Renault is on the divide of market- Nissan preferring export market while Renault voting for local market. Nissan believes that the markets of South Africa and Asia-Pacific would boost the volume in years to come.

Maruti hatches its back safe

The so called furor over the anticipated decline of share by Maruti in passenger car segment is sidelined. The competitive parade from Honda Jazz, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Tata Nano, Chevrolet Beat has no direct impact on Maruti till date. The hatchback segment is retaining Maruti still on top despite the fall of the entire market share by 50% during April 2010. Maruti enjoys almost 70% in this hatchback segment but the dip in net sale was due to the Alto’s slow reach, marked with the BS IV norms. However, it was a temporary hitch and Maruti is now regaining its hold, while Hyundai and Tata are racing against the loss. To cover up the already met loss and to avert further loss, Maruti is now eyeing on going in for CNG versions so that the cost effective strategy would work out well.

The CEO of Maruti for Marketing and Sales said that the company could secure its status by sticking to value-for-money, reliability and trust, style of the product concepts. Maruti’s high valor is its pricing competitively for the products amidst tough competition. The HSBC analysis reveals that in terms of cost yield, Maruti WagonR has an edge over Chevrolet Beat and Ford Figo which have 40% and 25% higher pricing and low resale values. Maruti is on the verge of negotiating with commodity vendors to finalize the cost of components before making the next rise in prices. Maruti is able to please its customers by reducing the waiting period of its Dzire from 6 months to 3 months while for Swift Diesel the waiting period is one month from 10 weeks.

U-turn from Peugeot

The French perfume is to be still alive with Peugeot all set to make its re-entry into the Indian market. The company has been in extinct for more than 20 years. Peugeot is looking for the best options in locating its plant, possibly in Tamilnadu since the company has been undergoing a critical phase in the declining European market. The steps are almost asserted by the officials of the Government of Tamilnadu with discussions going on between them. Specific details like the volume of amount, area of the plant are not immediately available, except the one that Peugeot is seeking a plant in which assembling of components may take place. It is not sure whether Peugeot is thinking of making a whole new factory. Already Renault-Nissan JV has a plant in Chennai thereby making Peugeot as the second French car maker to install a unit in Tamilnadu.

Further, Chennai surrounding has other top players like Ford, Mitsubishi, BMW, Hyundai. The net volume of car production from these companies is 10.80 lakh units and the official indication from the cabinet level indicated that the volume will increase to 12.8 lakh units along with 3.5 commercial vehicles. The statistics reveal the production capacity of the units @ 3 cars per minute and each commercial vehicle @75 seconds. Tamilnadu capital is preferred by the car makers for its eco-friendly surrounding, easy availability of components and excellent manpower.

Hyundai, Maruti on the track of new markets

The steering of Maruti and Hyundai is driving the search engine to new markets in the wake of wiped out incentive scheme in Europe and the undue shake in Euro. Hyundai faced a deep dip in its export exactly a year ago, by 2.3% which the company feels hard to make up even the combined markets of South Africa, West Asia, Australia and Vietnam. Maruti had a huge reap in European market but has reduced its target for 2011 to 1.4lakh units at 5%. In reality, European market has been feeding 80% of export revenue to Maruti. The company is on the search of replacement for the lost grounds like France, the UK, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

The alternative markets seem to be from South Africa, Hong Kong, Chile, Brunei, Algeria, Taiwan. Till last year the European market filled its roads with almost 25% of net cars made from India. The move had been due to the fuel-efficient technology injected into such cars. Within two months of this fiscal, there has been a fall in the export to Europe from 33% (4.46 lakh units ) of 2010 to 20%. Another major factor that led to the slid in the export revenue is the fall of15% in euro value. Maruti somewhat managed this situation and is expecting the worst. But the company is diverting its focus on dollar which seems to promote the forex stability.
