Alto gets another rivalry

Fiat India is no exception in the ever increasing mass for small cars in India. The fascination kindled by Maruti Alto prompted Fiat to initiate a small car for Indian market before 2012. At the same time there won’t be any look alike factors of Fiat especially Uno but will be in the entry level, with the possible price tag below than its own Punto [images], said the company’s MD for India. The proposed new will be all Indian – in make, – and will come under 1.0 lit category he added. In all the car will be designed to meet the demands of Indian customers. The company’s R&D wing is busy studying the technicalities involved in crafting the car to suit the Indian specifications. The move is made to induce more customers to Fiat’s fold thereby increasing its presence in the larger pie of the car market in India-from the current 1.5%.

[images]. However, Fiat is totally aware of the potential in the small car market and the equally rising competition. There had been a talk on the air about the reschedule of the schecluded Uno which took rest in the company’s facility. Fiat is one among those aspiring global and domestic makers to focus on the compact car segment.

Hyundai’s i10 and Ford’s Figo [images] and GM’s Beat [images] followed by VW’s Polo [images]. The industry analysts feel that Fiat has to reshape its dealer network to penetrate the small car segment. Another factor that Fiat must ensure is the easy availability of cheaper spares in domestic aspect. Currently Fiat is having a joint dealer network with Tata Motors but anything good will materialize only when Fiat does it on its own, feel the analysts. The after sales service is the key factor in running the show they admit.

Diesel cars to slow down their pace in sale

The of late demand for diesel cars may slowly fade away on the cost factor. With the rise in fuel is repeated the price of diesel may at once come on par petrol. Till now the sale of diesel vehicles is mainly based on the fuel cost difference between petrol and diesel. When the diesel price increases substantially the customers would not take the difference on bigger terms since they shell out heavy amount for diesel engines, said the VP of General Motors. The switch over from diesel to petrol will materialize earlier since the monthly fuel cost is the main factor for small car segment.

At present, due to heavy movement of diesel vehicles in the last two years, there was 20-25% sale in 2007 and it was 30-35% now. The Executive Officer of Maruti asserted the position and said that the increase in diesel cost would definitely have a hit on the demand. This would change if any technology modifies the diesel engine in coming years. Maruti has the best differential analysis since it has both diesel and petrol versions for certain models, 55-65% are in diesel variants. However the officials in Maruti say that it would be too early to predict the impact of diesel cost. The same feeling prevails in the camp of Hyundai but there is a justification of cost of diesel vehicles on sophisticated technology. Ford India still believes that the diesel cost would not bring in any instant impact that there might be customers who are attached to the diesel versions.
