Toyota flags off green-Prius

The greener version of the Auto Expo went off well with the world leader Toyota striking the string with its Prius. Costing Rs26.55lakh, it is delivered with Toyota Hybrid System II having 3 modes –power, eco and electric. Prius, though second after Honda Civic Hybrid, is to testify its credentials unlike Civic. Prius comes with the company’s hope of pining the aspiring green Indian consumers.

Toyota and Honda had their long time run to launch the hybrid version on account of heavy duties slashed by the government, thereby making the cost of car on the increase. Other displays in hybrid concept versions in the Expo are from Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland (Hypus-slated for Commonwealth games)), Volvo(a CNG bus and is in negotiations with two governments), Hyundai, GM ( Chevrolet Spark ). This is powered by the battery provided by Reva Electric Bangalore. Tata Motors’ 35-seater bus Starbus is a CNG/electric low-floor hybrid; one more green truck LPT 16 13 CNG.

The hybrid version in bus sector is the first ever in auto industry, said an official from Ashok Leyland. Under two wheeler sector TVS has displayed two concepts at the Expo which includes an electric scooter TVS Qube 2.0

Proof of shield to cars- the cited affair of the Auto Show

Shattering of glasses, denting of bumpers and marks of bullets piercing the body are no longer the sober features to moan. The Auto Expo in New Delhi displays the bullet-proof ranges of cars, exclusive ones for police personnel, defence services and politicians. The sensitive industry is equally booming in a terror-stricken country.

Chanakya Automobiles India is the only such company at the Expo and it displaces the government owned Medak Ordinance Factory. Chanakya Automobiles is certified by the Bureau of Police Research and Development for making bullet-proof vehicles for VVIPs in the country. In the same category are a Kanpur-based Shri Lakshmi Cotsyn who make indigenous models of armoured vehicles differing from Chanakya’s conventional versions.

Tata fills its slot with its Safaris in a market full of infringing new comers. But Chanakya intends to take advantage by being in the forefront. It boasts its products built with cocooned steel body and glass-resistant bullets, arrowing from 9mm pistol – NATO assault rifles. The run-flat tyres are capable to run 50kms @50km/hr speed even after receiving firing from close range.

Chanakya views two advantages over Ordinance Factory- longer delivery time (16-24 months) and product rigidity of ‘take it or leave it”, which is not compromised by the politicians on safety and comfort. As of now, Chanakya has sold 6 units and got orders for 50 numbers.

The cost factor is mystical, as transforming a Pajero or a Motero into a bullet-proof is equally hard task. For Pajero the cost would be up by Rs44.5 lakh and for an Ambassador it would be Rs22 lakhs. Chanakya employs Swedish steel, the special glass, laser rods, welding rods amd run-flat tyres all imported. Cost will be equally higher for bigger vehicles. For Ambassador the cost is lesser due to less modifications than for an SUV.

It will not be a mere bullet-proof vehicle, but it will be bullet-resistant vehicle. It can resist two simultaneous grenades in the underside and parallel sides apart from overhead airbursts. The official from Chanakya is quite pragmatic to match the sophisticated bullets from the richer terrorists.

Innovation at best – at the Auto Expo

In a world surmounted by technology, innovation is not a means but a skill. The Auto Expo in New Delhi is witnessing the innovative deeds carved out in the form of Personalised Mover(slated for Commonwealth games) and a Formula Student Car- both developed by the students belonging to Delhi Technological University. The Mover, named Mitra, can carry a single person by standing on a motorized board.

The vehicle is ideal for places like airports corridors, institutional campuses and speciality buildings like hospitals- to evolve zero noise pollution. The trial is scheduled for bigger complexes at the ensuing Commonwealth games. The Formula Student Car, weighing 205kg, is designed from carbon fibre body and other chassis segments. It is powered by Honda CVR 600 RR MPFi engine and is ca[able of 70BHP output from its electronic fuel injection. It is aided by a G-force indicator and data loggers. The car will be showcased at the Formula Student Car competition in Britain.

Trucks patter with tricks

The Auto Expo in New Delhi is radiating to better glimpses as trucks of all likes glow exponentially. World leaders Volvo, Daimler and Navistar have showcased their masterpieces as domestic makers refresh for new ventures. The trucks display the sophistication and the indigenous concepts.
Daimler is brushing its face with its Actros to be imported though it has plans to launch new ranges. The company is depending on its Chennai Greenfield plant, invested at Rs4400 crore. Volvo, another giant in the truck industry, has unleashed its vehicle for Rs1 crore.

The trucks carry with them the luxury features – automatic transmission, air suspension systems, adjustable power steering, electronic seats and front and side air bags. All these features are uncommon in many cars of these sector. Further, these trucks have the advantage of regular gizmos. The irony is that many of these ranges do not fit into the allocated pavilions of the Expo.

Volvo is scooping on the technological advancements and infras. Volvo India’s President said that Indian market would find the company’s trucks smooth enough to drive away and the quality, allied with technology would sell. M&M’s MD said that there’s wider scope for trucks and the Indian market would spin off the boom for trucks. He defined the market as a good platform for the new comers, since there is no plateauing.

M&M has an association with the US Navistar under 51:49% basis and has launched two products at the Expo- MN49 and MN40. More variants and buses are also in the offing. The purchase of such costly machines is possible courtesy better surface roads and voluntariness of transporters to invest in best vehicles.

According to the MD of Ashok Leyland, these trucks represent the trucks of the future to meet the needs of growing economy. Tata Motors is in the fray with its next generation truck Prima costing Rs50lakhs. Prima is capable of carrying 50-200 tonne load against conventional 16 tonne load to run 700kms per day against 300-350kms by conventional trucks. The transporters invest huge amount seeking valuable returns and they are most sought after in steel /cement industries. The drivers of these trucks are exposed to extra care and special modes of driving.

Maruti is a 54.2% share owned Japan’s Suzuki company, to sell the -seater Eeco for Rs275000. The electric version of this vehicle was available in the Auto Expo. Maruti, having a stronghold in the India market with large ranges and 30 years presence, hopes to sell 40000 units of Eeco per year.

Toyota’s Prius on launch

With the launch Toyota seems to have fulfilled its commitment towards eco-friendly cars in India, said its Deputy MD. This 3rd generation Prius has a 1.8 lit petrol engine with a battery of 60KW and has 3 driving modes- power, Eco mode and Electric vehicle mode(battery).

The vehicle has been in the highlight since 1997 as the first hybrid vehicle in the world and continues the same stint with a sale volume of 1.5 million.
