TVS Jupiter

TVS have launched a variant called the Classic Edition of their popular scooter, the Jupiter, and it is priced at Rs 55,266 (ex-showroom, Delhi). At first glance, the overall design of the scooter hints at an old-school approach, retro-styled approach. As such, it appears that the Classic Edition will go up against the classic Vespas and Yamaha’s retro-modern Fascino. While the Jupiter is priced much lower than the Vespas, there could be a close fight with the Fascino.

Perhaps the most noticeable addition to the scooter would be the windshield which was not offered previously. Combined with the full chrome mirrors and the Sunlit Ivory body colour, it does pull off a classic look. Other features to aid visual appeal include Classic Edition decals, dual-tone seat and classic-looking dials. Another stand-out feature on the Classic Edition is a cushioned backrest for the pillion, a feature that is somewhat unique to this segment.

Under the fancy clothing, the engine remains the same, churning out 8 PS at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 8 Nm at 5,500 rpm. The TVS Jupiter continues to be offered with the convenience of USB charging and the safety of Sync Braking System (SBS). The price difference between the standard Jupiter and the Classic Edition is minimal, so it will be interesting to see how the Indian scooter market responds to this design approach from TVS.

Unique Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) technology by Honda. A world first in motorcycles

Africa Twin is equipped with Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) System for a smooth acceleration or deceleration, depending on rider’s intent. The long road to adventure is varied and the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) machine gives you a choice of Manual and Automatic gear shifting to suit tarmac, dirt tracks and steep mountain passes. Experience a more enjoyable ride by focusing on the sensations of accelerating, turning and braking your motorcycle. Control your bike to your heart’s content. DCT technology brings the fundamentals of motorcycles – the joy of riding and control – to a whole new level. D mode offers the best balance of fuel economy and comfort cruising, while S mode provides extra levels of sport performance, with three different shift patterns to choose from. Africa Twin is also fully equipped to operate in an off-road environment, and its functionality is enhanced by the G-Mode. Pushing the G-button in any riding mode modifies the control of the clutch system to give a more direct drive.

Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) & Switchable ABS

Africa Twin comes standard-equipped with the HSTC (Honda Selectable Torque Control) system which controls the engine’s torque output by detecting differences in the slip ratio between front and rear wheels. The standard Anti-Locking Braking System and traction control offer multiple driving modes for different conditions.  It’s possible for the rider to turn off the ABS system for the rear brake, allowing the rider to lock the rear wheel when riding off-road. There are four levels of control to choose from the Honda Selectable Torque Control: Level 1, 2, 3 and Off.

A True companion ‘on & off-road’

The adventure begins where the road ends. Inheriting the “Go Anywhere” spirit of its celebrated predecessors, the CRF1000L Africa Twin packs an innovative, compact and powerful parallel twin-cylinder engine (makes 65Kw peak power @ 7,500 rpm and 92Nm torque @ 6,000 rpm) into a lightweight, agile chassis ready for true adventure both on and off road – whether crossing continents or commuting. The inverted cartridge type fully-adjustable front forks come with a 230 mm stroke – the longest in its class – with a good range of rebound and compression settings. With a class-leading 250 mm ground clearance, riding this bike off-road is a glide. The Dual LED headlights evoke memories of those Dakar winning machines.

Volkswagen India exports its 2,50,000th car to Mexico

Volkswagen India added yet another milestone to its local success story by exporting the 2,50,000th India-made car to Mexico till date. The range of cars exported includes locally-made left hand drive Polo and Vento cars, with the latter witnessing high demand in the geography resulting in a steep incline in exports over the years. In fact, the made-in-India Vento has gone on to become the third highest selling car in the entire passenger car market in Mexico and currently makes up the bulk of car exports by Volkswagen to this geography at 2,10,000.

In total, Volkswagen India exports to over 35 countries across four continents of North America, South America, Africa and Asia and has shipped more than 310,000 cars to these geographies till date. The latest shipment to Mexico will be delivered by Höegh Trigger, the largest vessel of Höegh Autoliners which is also the world’s largest pure car and truck carrier.

Volkswagen India started exports to Mexico with the Volkswagen Vento in the year 2013, within four years of establishing its production plant in the country in 2009. Since then, the export business for Volkswagen from India has only grown while the company has simultaneously worked on further strengthening its local market presence. The export volumes to Mexico contribute to more than half of the total production at the Volkswagen plant in Pune today.

The Vento, built at the Pune Plant, replaced the Jetta Classico in the Mexican market. After being introduced, the made-in-India Vento immediately became a popular car in this market owing to its design, robust build, highest safety standards, comfort and space – all of which ensured an impressive driving experience.

Said Dr. Andreas Lauermann, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited, “The growing popularity of India-made Volkswagen cars in markets like Mexico and others lays testament to our strong focus on quality products across all our manufacturing investments worldwide – in line with our think global, build local philosophy! India on its part, has offered Volkswagen a rich mix of strong local market opportunity combined with manufacturing prowess that helps us serve the world with cars that are German in their soul and local in their flavour.” He went on to add, “We continue to invest in this opportunity and look forward to more successes from India in the years to come.”

The Volkswagen Pune Plant has so far attracted an investment of over € 825 million (₨ 5720 crore). The plant has achieved a localisation level of approximately 82% (without engines and transmissions). With a workforce of 4000 employees, the plant has been operating in three shifts since March 2016
