Yamaha’s new offering – The Alba

For the Family..

Yamaha has launched a new bike named ‘alba’, if you are expecting a true Yamaha bike once again Yamaha disappoints you – Alba a 106cc bike targets the mass segment. The new Yamaha’s Alba is just a face lifted version of libero G5; but Yamaha’s new offering possesses some cool features. Yamaha wants to make a family bike; truly Yamaha has made some attempts with the new Alba. Let’s check the Alba!

Engine:

Alba is powered by the same engine which propels liberoG5 and Crux. The engine pumps out 7.6bhp@7500 rpm and a peak torque 80Nm at 6000rpm. Alba’s engine is mated to 4 speed gearbox (Yamaha’s favoured shift pattern – first down and the rest three up). Though the shift feel is not satisfactory, the gearbox feedback is good and the correctly spaced out gear ratios and the other technologies faciliates considerable levels of torque continue to be available even at lower rpm bands. Our test bike managed to chug along at 20 kmph on fourth gear (without knocking). Yamaha claims 85kpl in standard conditions but in our test drive we are able to get 65kpl. Alba is able to clock a top speed of 95kph and vibration is virtually non-existent even at top speeds but a cluttering sound grows as the speed increases.

Styling and Engineering:

Unlike the liberoG5 which aerodynamic styling spoils the friendly nature, Alba is styled to be cool. No stylish scoops for this family bike. Alba also differs from liberoG5 with its new stylish front cowl, Yamaha’s R1 type new indicator (though no clear lens) and new tail light. The fairing conceals a twin-pod instrument cluster that includes a circular speedometer, the fuel gauge and warning lights. As in the Libero G5, the turn indicator lights are placed between the two pods. Alloy wheels are offered optional. The horn knob is hard to find also Yamaha’s Alba fails to derive cues from TVS, no pilot lamps and no self start even as optional.

Ride and handling:

Alba demands a forward ride posture the long wheel base may be the factor. Unlike the Gladiator the seats are supportive, also the adjustable hydraulic shock absorber at the rear gives smoother ride. The 173mm ground clearance is retained and is a good option for a city bike like Alba. But unlike the libero G5 the pillion seat height has been reduced to make Alba a family bike. Straight line stability is as good as other Yamaha bike but Alba lacks flexibility especially when compared to Star city in corners.130mm drum brakes are standard on front and rear.

Colour and price:

Alba is available in four colours red, silver, black and blue. On the road the spoke wheeled Alba is priced Rs 43,500 and alloy wheel is priced Rs45,500. I wonder How Yamaha will position its Alba with this price when 99.3cc Bajaj’s Platina is available around Rs38000. Yamaha has been struggling to get the family bike image since 2001, yes, Alba is a right step in that direction. But whether the family image for the performance maker is necessary?

Update: Yamaha Alba’s exclusive pictures is available here

Ford’s new Endeavour

Season of Facelifts..

The premium SUV segment is dominated by Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR- V and Ford Endeavour (also Nissan X Trail makes decent number). Hyundai Tucson and Honda CRV uplifted variants were launched few months back. Now, its turn for Ford Endeavour! Ford has already launched its facelifted Endeavour/Everest in other markets Ford’s new Endeavour will head India soon. Let’s check out the new Endeavour.

Engine and powertrain:

Ford throws away the now available indirect injection engine and the new endeavour will get the necessary CRDi engine. The 2.5L CRDi engine generates 143bhp at 3500 rpm and a whooping torque of 330Nm at 1800rpm.This CRDi engine will make the new Endeavour most powerful beast in this category. In Thailand ford’s Everest is launched in four variants with a mix of 4WD/2WD and 2.5L/3L engine. If the same mix is launched in India true SUV lovers can find a resort in the form of Endeavour. New Endeavour gets a new 5 speed automatic transmission system though manual may be offered in India. The new five-speed automatic transmission system features an innovative Transmission Control Module (TCM) that can automatically detect and quickly adjust to the changing engine speed and driving condition. It keeps the transmission system always at its peak power band, thus making the vehicle more responsive. The new endeavour’s 4WD transmission system is equipped with the world renowned Borg Warner transfer system and electronic Active Shift-on-the-Fly, allowing a driver to shift the driving mode from 2WD to 4WD at high driving speeds of up to 100 km/h. Ford claims the new transmission system will make the new Endeavour perfect for both urban and highway driving as well as off road while providing the best possible fuel economy (22% more than the existing Endeavour)

Styling and Engineering:

Endeavour is the only true SUV available in the market; the SUVs are not meant for city or highway driving but truly make its sense in off-road. But the concept of crossover has diluted Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V. Endeavour is the India’s Hummer or land Rover. Thank you ford for retaining the masculine and intimidating look in the new Endeavour/Everest too. When other manufacturers embrace modern technologies Ford nicely blends old and the new. Except for the square shoulder look (that too is necessary) everything is new, sorry! Old, new Endeavour is made on ladder frame, leaf springs suspends this 1894kg SUV at the rear.

efront.jpgfront12.jpgside4.jpgrear5.jpg

photos: exisiting endeavour/new endeavour front/side/rear

The bold and tough styling of the new Ford Endeavour gives it a commanding presence on the road. A distinctive chrome front grille, prominent wheel arches, extra large wing mirrors with in-built indicators and puddle light and a dominant power dome on the hood all add to that strong look, that’s unmistakably Ford. The toughness is more than skin deep. The two tone exterior and the cladding have not been passed to the new Endeavour. In the rear new Endeavour got no major changes. Endeavour’s characteristic hard spare tire cover has been retained.

The new Endeavour may look like an army tank or truck in the exterior but Ford desperately tries to make the new Endeavour’s interior to resemble a luxury sedan. The plush two-toned treatment of the interior perfectly complements the smooth brushed metal console. New stylish instrument panel consists of illuminating needles on tacho, speedo and fuel indicator. Dashboard looks elegant in silver and black combination and plush leather upholsteries make interior a cool one.

For new endeavour’s 360′ interiors/exteriors

While power windows, power steering, keyless entry system eases Endeavour to drive three-section split air conditioning, durable side foot step and rear defogger eases passengers to live. The 2nd row seat can be easily folded while the third row seat can be completely removed. The usual entry & exit problem in three row seating procedure will be in new Endeavour too this can be evident from claimed legroom. Also because of the spare tyre, the tail gate becomes small hence a Chevrolet captiva like opening rear glass must have been offered, but sadly not which makes Endeavour boot hard to access.

Ride and Handling:

New Endeavour uses ventilated disc at the front and drum at the rear to brake assisted by ABS with EBD. Gear ratios have been changed to increase the performance. Double wishbone with anti roll bar and two stage leaf spring at the rear suspends this 1894kg SUV. Endeavour’s same 265/70 tubeless tyres may replace 245/70 offered in Thailand. Re-circulating ball and nut type power assisted steering might bring you the good straight line stability but the absence of any traction control or ESP (Electronic Stability Program) in new Endeavour will deter you in corners.

Safety and Security:

The body construction has been strengthened with door intrusion beams and reinforced A, B and C-pillars to manage crash forces away from the driver and passengers while still maintaining the shape and integrity of the passenger safety cell. Driver and Co-driver airbags will be standard in new Endeavour too.

Braking is assisted by ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), load sensing proportioning valve (LSPV) and a G-sensor to ensure optimum stopping capabilities on all surfaces. Headlamps have been improved with a greater light distribution while upgraded tail lamps, side indicators and a new center high-mounted stop lamp in the roof spoiler improves visibility of both driver and fellow drivers. For security, the Endeavour is equipped with anti theft alarm and Engine Immoblizer.

Summing it up…

Yes, the Ford will bring the true SUV in the form of new Endeavour. The Endeavour gets a much needed CRDi engine but a little bit of careful engineering if made when it is launched in India, the new Endeavour will certainly lure crossover lovers. But Ford’s new Endeavour also has to match upcoming Maruti’s new Grand Vitara(escudo), Chevrolet Captiva and Nissan new 2nd generation X Trail apart from Hyundai Tucson and Honda CRV. The segment is hotting up, tough time ahead for the buyers to make the pick?

Tata’s new spacio and IndigoXL

in the price war…

Tata Motors has joined the price war created by Mahindra’s new Bolero and Mahindra Renault Logan. Tata Motors has launched two base (trimmed) models of its well known products Tata Spacio and Tata IndigoXL. The spacio base model has been named as Tata Spacio Gold Plus (for the base model why the plus tag?) and the base Indigo XL will continue with the same badge. Here’s information on base models.

Spacio Gold Plus:

Tata Motors today announced the launch of a new Upgraded range of its entry level utility vehicle offering, the Tata Spacio. Named the Spacio Gold Plus, the new range seeks to enhance customer experience in the areas of performance, fuel economy, comfort and convenience.

New Heart…

*Spacio Gold Plus gets a new heart in the form of the 3 Litre, DI engine which now gets Turbocharged to substantially raise the maximum power and torque ratings to 70 PS (at 3000 rpm) and 223 Nm (at 2200 rpm) respectively. The enhancement in power has been accompanied by a significant raising of the fuel efficiency of the vehicle by over 15%. The Spacio Gold Plus delivers a best in class 15 kmpl (under test conditions) thus enhancing upon a key market requirement.

*The vehicle is also characterised by a much lower NVH (noise vibration and harshness). The entire Spacio range now comes with best in class turning circle radius of 4.9 metres.

New features…

Spacio Gold Plus has been launched in 2 trim levels, both sporting power steering with a soft touch steering wheel, front bucket seats, new decals and refined interiors.

*Both the variants come in 2 seating configurations: 6 + driver and 8 + driver.

Tata Spacio Gold Plus is priced between Rs 5.1 lakh to Rs 5.4 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

Indigo XL base model:

*The Indigo XL is currently available in diesel and petrol variants priced at Rs 7.54 lakh and Rs 6.85 lakh respectively.

*The newly launched base model is likely to be Rs 1 lakh cheaper than the existing top of the line XL model.

* The new indigoXL base model will continue to have two kind of 1.4 litre engines – the 16-valve Twin-Cam petrol engine churning out 101 PS and the silent high torque 70 PS DICOR (common rail) diesel engine.

What’s not in the base model?

*The Economy model may not have certain features, like the DVD-based four-speaker integrated entertainment system with headrest-mounted twin LCD screen, a 12V socket in the rear console, electrically operated outer rear-view mirrors with integrated turn indicator lamps, six-way-powered front seats with lumbar support and chiller compartment in the glove box, which are present in the XL variant.

Yamaha Gladiator Vs Hero Honda Glamour FI

Odds in the crowd…

125cc segment is crowded with many products such as TVS victor GLX, Victor Edge, Bajaj Discover, Hero Honda (HH) Super Splendor, Hero Honda Glamour, Suzuki Heat, zeus and Honda Shine. These are commuter bikes and are of usual kind but Yamaha’s Gladiator J.A(Gladiator J.A is a cosmetic changed version of Gladiator) and Hero Honda’s Glamour FI – Fuel Injection stands odd in the crowd, one with its masculinity and other with its technology. Gladiator and Glamour FI may not be mass sellers but if you need something special these two will be your options.

Engine and Powertrain:

Gladiator is powered by 123.7cc four stroke engine, the engine puts out a peak power of 10.72bhp at 7,500 rpm and the peak torque of 10.4Nm sets in at 6,500 rpm. As usual performance of this engine is unquestionable, Gladiator reaches 60kph in 6.5s and the top speed is little over 100. In the refinement too Gladiator scores high, Yamaha ensures better refinement with counter balancer for the crankshaft which enables the Gladiator to even out a lot of the vibrations that are usually felt at higher speeds. Yamaha knows performance and refinement is not only enough to sell the bike it has incorporated a sensor called YTPS – Yamaha Throttle Positioning Sensor which works with BS carburetor to offer better mileage. Gladiator engine has been mated to a five-speed gearbox (one-down, four-up shift-pattern) with comfortably spaced out ratios.

First a lot of thanks to Hero Honda (HH) for incorporating Fuel Injection in smaller bikes, with Fuel Injection Hero Honda has not only made its bike different but also pushed its peers to follow the same (Bajaj Pulsar 220cc will feature a FI engine, shine, unicorn and many on the cards).Glamour PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) makes 9bhp@7000rpm and a healthy torque of 10.35Nm@4000rpm which will help you to ride glamour in city easily. Cold starting is where the technology kicks in which helps you to start easily. Glamour features conventional 4 speed gearbox and reaches 60kph in 7s and its top speed is little over 90kph.

Yes both the engines are technically superior, but when comes to mileage, as usual Yamaha loses to its peer it returns a combined figure of only 49kpl (YTPS doesn’t makes any magic for Yamaha) even carbureted glamour scores better than Gladiator. Fuel Injection makes Glamour FI to deliver class leading mileage of 62kpl. Though transistorized ignition system helps glamour in pick up, with much lesser power to weight ratio Glamour FI is no match to Yamaha’s Gladiator on the performance front.

Styling and Engineering

Gladiator Type J.A. (short for you know who) is different from Gladiator only in this area, the engine block, silencer pipe, sub-frames and rear grab rail are all in soft matt-black. Brand ambassador John Abraham’s signature is on the Gladiator J.A fuel tank and on the scoops is the Yamaha’s famous three-tuning-forks logo in gold. Alloy triple clamp is a nice touch. Positioned neatly within the visor in the headlamp unit is a twin-pod instrument cluster featuring separate speedo and fuel-gauge clocks that also display turn indicators and a neutral indicator lamp. Clear lens winker in the rear is borrowed from Yamaha’s flagship model R-1. Sadly, there is no tacho and gear indicator. The Type J.A. is offered with self/electric start and disc brakes as standard fitment. Deluxe version gets alloy wheels.

‘Love it or Hate it’ type Glamour styling is marketed as severely magnetic by Hero Honda. Though aerodynamically designed and aesthetically sculpted it lacks some charm! Black finish must have been extended to muffler and suspension. PGM-FI logo is nicely placed on the faux scoops, similar to the gladiator, glamour also features integrated rear indicators. The Hi tech Glamour FI features clever systems such as RTMI – Real Time Mileage Indicator which displays the average mileage for the last ten seconds of travel (sometimes reads out false figures), digital fuel gauge, engine malfunction indicator and bank angle sensor. Disc brakes and electric start are optional whereas alloy wheel is standard in Glamour FI.

On the styling the choice is yours, in engineering Glamour seems good, Glamour FI’s rider-friendly fascia (easily viewed even in blinding sunlight) is one such example of high standard of Engineering.

Ride and Handling:

Clutch feel on both Gladiator and Glamour FI is satisfactory. Disc brake at the front and drum at the rear is standard in Gladiator J.A whereas in Glamour FI disc at the front is optional. Both the bikes features wider tyre at the rear. Glamour is not for sporty; flicks have to be made careful. Suspension on both these bikes are not class leading and particularly makes longer ride quite distressing with its very soft seats. (Gladiator J.A’s seat gets new style material for its cover). Yamaha gearbox’s heel shifter is too small and tends to slip during quick acceleration moves while gear shifting from first to second is little bit notchy on Glamour. Overall Gladiator handles better than Glamour.

Price and Colours:

Glamour is available in five colours (black with super gold, black with frost blue, black with sports red, sports red with black and black with silver) and is priced Rs55,990(disc +self start). Gladiator is available in four colours while Gladiator J.A though called black it is a blend of three colours black, silver and purple and is priced Rs46,990.

The price differential between the ordinary Gladiator and the type J.A. is Rs 1,500 whereas the price differential between the Glamour PGM-FI and the carburetted version is Rs 5,500.

Verdict:

For the performance its Yamaha, Gladiator proves it again with a high powered engine and five speed gearbox. For the fuel efficiency its Hero Honda, Glamour FI makes it again with its advanced Fuel Injection technology. A hefty price tag on Glamour FI(it offers only 2-4km more than carburetted glamour) and Gladiator’s poor fuel efficiency figure make these bikes unattractive for cost conscious customers. As already said both Gladiator J.A and Glamour FI may not be mass sellers as discover or super splendor but both is/will make their loving owners happy.

World’s cheapest cars

Ford and GM are posting record losses for the past many years. Chrysler is suffering is heading bankruptcy Daimler wishes to sell out the ailing partner. The cheapest car (logan) ever made by an European manufacturer when it hits Indian roads it gets cheaper further by 15%. Carlos Ghosn the head of Renault – Nissan has said India is the place where we can learn frugal manufacturing.

Business week has listed cheapest cars build by manufacturers around the world. Here are few cars that have/will hit our indian roads for your view. Of the 16 cars listed by Business week 10 cheapest cars are already in India, 2(Chevrolet spark and Logan MPV) will be launched soon. Be proud of being Indian, India is the paradise for low cost manufacturing. For every manufacturer India has lot to offer, for ailing manufacturers India is the hospital. Listen Ford and General Motors! explore India to revive you. Forgive me! some of these cars listed are luxurious in India.

Suzuki Maruti 800

800.jpgLaunched in 1983, the compact Maruti 800 with a 796-cc gasoline engine was the smallest car ever to hit Indian roads. Made by Suzuki Motors in partnership with the Indian government at a plant in Gurgaon, outside New Delhi, the Maruti has been the king of the small-car market. Nobody has been able to beat the four-door, 3.3m long, 650kg. M-800 on price. With a current price tag of $4,400(app 2 lakh) and up, it was the dream drive for middle-class Indians. Suzuki has done little to tweak the design of the fuel-efficient-15 km a liter (roughly 36 mpg)-vehicle. Maruti has been saying that it’s phasing out the M-800 for some time now. But with Tata’s $2,200(approximately 1 lakh) car expected in 2008, there’s talk that the M-800 price will be slashed to take on the new competitor. Its clientele has largely been buyers upgrading from two-wheelers. The M-800 is exported to Chile, Egypt, Algeria, Peru, and Nicaragua.

GM Daewoo Matiz Mini/Chevrolet Spark

matiz.jpgGeneral Motors’ takeover of Korea’s Daewoo Motor in 2002 has given the U.S. giant a source to develop small cars at lower costs. GM executives acknowledge that the Korean unit, now called GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, has been crucial in internationalizing the Chevrolet brand. The vast majority of non-U.S. sales of the vehicle under this nameplate come from Korea. The Matiz mini, also called the Chevrolet Spark in some markets, is a five-seat, five-door hatchback. GM, whose joint venture in China is assembling the Spark in China with kits shipped from Korea, is due to manufacture the vehicle in India from this year. It is powered by a 0.8-liter or 1-liter single overhead camshaft (SOHC) gasoline engine and measures 3.5m in overall length, rides on a wheelbase of 2.4m, and is 1.5m tall. Last year, some 291,700 Matizes and Sparks were sold in Europe, China, and other Asian markets. At the New York International Automobile Show in April, GM unveiled the four-door Chevrolet Trax, a concept model developed from the Matiz, to gauge interest in the mini among U.S. buyers.

Fiat Uno

uno.jpgFiat’s cheap and cheerful cars reigned supreme in Europe in the 1980s, when the first Uno subcompact was launched. Cheap sticker prices and low maintenance costs made the Uno a hit 20 years ago, but quality and handling were subpar, and popularity waned over time. Fiat stopped selling the Uno in Europe in 1995, but still produces it in emerging markets such as Brazil, where it is called the Mille and even includes a flex-fuel system that allows it to run on ethanol. A new ultra-low-cost Uno is now on the drawing board at Fiat’s Turin research and development center.

Tata Indica

indica.jpgIndia is gaga over the Indica, the country’s first indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured car-and a best-seller to boot. It is made by Tata Motors, a division of India’s best-known conglomerate-the Tata Group. The launch of the 1.4-liter diesel Indica in 1998 was followed two years later by a gasoline version. The Indica realizes Chairman Ratan Tata’s dream of providing all the comforts of a big car for the price of a small one. The success of the Indica has now spurred Tata to build an even cheaper car, with a price target of around $2,200(app 1 lakh).

Hyundai Atos – santro in India

santro.jpgHyundai Motor gradually reduced the output of its Atos mini car in Korea to shift its production base to India, and since 2003, Hyundai has been making all of its Atoses there. A mainstay in India, where it is sold under the Santro badge, the vehicle is a five-seat, five-door hatchback. First launched in 1998, the Santro measures 3.5m in overall length, rides on a wheelbase of 2.4m., and is 1.6m. tall. In its European incarnation, power comes from a 1-liter multi-port injection SOHC gasoline engine, while the Indian model is fitted with a 1.1-liter MPI SOHC. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a four-speed automatic is optional. Prices in India start at $6,350(Rs2,71,208) for the base model and climb to $9,920(Rs4,23,683) for the fully loaded top-end model. Options include air conditioning, antilock brakes, power windows, and dual front airbags. Over 1.3 million Atoses have been built, with more than 313,000 units exported from India to over 60 markets around the world.

Suzuki Maruti Alto

alto.jpgOnce not so popular in India, the diminutive five-seater Suzuki Alto is now driving Maruti’s exports. Launched in 2000, the 47-bhp, five-speed transmission car was a laggard until 2003. Today the entry-level compact is the best-selling vehicle in the Maruti Suzuki stable, knocking the M-800 from the top slot. In 2006-07, the Alto, with its contemporary design, sold 200,000 units in just 11 months. First unveiled for the European market at the 2002 Geneva Auto Show, it has been exported to most European countries. Costing upwards of $6,000(Rs2,56,260), it is expected to replace the aging M-800 as the flagship.

Fiat Palio

palio.jpgFiat’s Palio is a forerunner of the new-generation low-cost cars. Launched in Brazil in 1996, the subcompact was designed on the platform of the ’80s-era Uno as a world car for developing countries. It is now a family of five models ranging from hatchback to station wagon, also built in Russia, Poland and Turkey. The Palio sells for around $5,000(Rs2,13,550) in those markets, but analysts say the car is outdated and increasingly uncompetitive as it relies on older technologies and components to keep costs down. Fiat announced in March that the Palio family will be replaced by a new-generation super-low-cost car, also called the Uno.

Hyundai Getz

getz.jpgTaking careful aim at the European small-car market, Hyundai had the Getz designed at the company’s European styling studio to ensure the final product met European tastes and needs. In late 2006, Getz production shifted from Korea to India, expanding the role of the Indian subsidiary as Hyundai’s global hub for small cars. Getz exports from India began recently.

The five-seat, five-door hatchback stands 1.5m tall, shorter than the Atos, but the Getz is longer, sporting a wheelbase of 2.5m and an overall length of 3.8m. Power comes from a wide variety of powerplants: The base Indian version is fitted with a 1.4-liter SOHC. Gas-electric hybrid versions of the Getz are available in Korea, while Europeans favor the 1.5-liter diesel. The 1.6-liter DOHC gas engine is the most popular in all other markets. Electronic brake force distribution and dual front and side airbags are among the options. Since the model’s introduction in 2002, more than 863,000 units have been sold. Getz prices start at $9,400(Rs4,01,474) and max out at $11,700(Rs4,99,707).

Suzuki Maruti Swift

swift.jpgThe Swift is Maruti Suzuki’s first global car, launched simultaneously in Japan, China, Europe, and India. Maruti’s engineers spent nearly a year in Japan working on the design and development along with their Suzuki counterparts. Considered to be one of the most stylish cars on the Indian roads, the 1.3-liter Swift launched in 2005 and costs $8,800(Rs3,75,848) and up. With 100,000 units produced, it is currently being exported to Subcontinent countries.

Dacia Logan Sedan- In India as Mahindra-Renault Logan:

logan.jpgFrench automaker Renault pioneered the 21st century cheap-is-chic car segment with the 2004 Dacia Logan. The goal was to offer buyers in emerging markets maximum roominess for the lowest possible price: $6,600(Rs2,81,886). Rivals derided the boxy sedan as outmoded, but when it was unveiled at the Paris auto show, West Europeans clamored for the spacious, no-frills 75-hp sedan. Renault slashed costs by building the car in Romania, stripping out a lot of electronic gear, and making many features such as power steering optional.

Chevrolet Aveo/Kalos

aveo.jpgThe Chevrolet Aveo has the lowest starting price of all 2007 new cars in the U.S., beating all Japanese and Korean brands. Also called the Kalos in some markets, it is built by GM Daewoo, which is now responsible for developing new-generation mini and small cars for all GM brands. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price in the U.S., including destination charge, for a base Aveo-a five-passenger, five-door hatchback-is $10,560(Rs4,51,017). The 2007 Aveo sedan, with more standard equipment, starts at $12,575((Rs5,32,807). In the U.S. the Aveo comes with a 1.6-liter double overhead camshaft (DOHC) four-cylinder engine, but in Europe and Asia it is powered by a 1.2-liter SOHC or 1.4-liter DOHC. The Aveo is 4.9 ft. tall, 12.7 ft. long, and 5.5 ft. wide. Last year, GM sold a total of 395,800 Aveos and Kalos in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Dacia Logan MPV – will be launched soon
logan-mpv.jpg This low-cost, seven-seat minivan first hit European showrooms in October, stoking sales for Renault. Customers in Western Europe are waiting six months for delivery. No wonder: The starting price of the Romanian-built minivan is $10,900(Rs4,65,539)-some 40% less than rival models by Skoda, Volkswagen, or GM-Opel. A luxury model with air conditioning and power steering starts at $15,500(Rs6,62,005). This model’s attractive design, modular interior, and huge load capacity show how the new generation of low-cost cars could grow to 15% of the total Western auto market.

Wherever Indian finds a place chinese too. Chinese manufacturers are equally competitive and have produced low cost cars. But unlike the indian counterparts they are not impeccable. There are issues of copycat between the western and Chinese manufacturers.

Chery QQ3

qq.jpgWuhu (Anhui, China)-based Chery’s most popular model is the QQ, which launched in 2003. The 0.8-to-1.3-liter QQ sells for $3,900(Rs1,66,569) to $5,200(Rs2,22,092) and competes directly with the Chevrolet Spark, which is based on GM subsidiary Daewoo’s Matiz. Indeed in 2005, Chery settled a three-year suit against it by GM Daewoo, which alleged the Chinese company had copied its car. The QQ is popular with youthful first-time auto buyers in China and sells particularly well to women. The QQ, which already is exported to the Middle East and Latin America, is scheduled to go on sale in Turkey later this year.

Chery Flagcloud

chery-flagcloud.jpgAlso called the Cowin, this four-door sedan was launched in August, 2003, and is produced at Chery headquarters in Wuhu, Anhui, China. It has a 16-valve, four-cylinder engine that revs to 6,000 rpm. But the Flagcloud also boasts a fuel-efficient, low-emission engine aimed at meeting European standards, and features antilock brakes and electronic brake force distribution for safe driving in inclement conditions. Sticker price ranges from $7,300(Rs3,11,783) to $12,500(Rs5,33,875). The Flagcloud is exported to more than 30 countries in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe and is also assembled in Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and Malaysia. Chery has announced plans to sell a range of its models in the U.S. within the next few years

It is produced in Geely’s Ningbo, Zhejiang factory. Geely, which already exports to Southeast Asia and Africa, says it aims to export its cars to the U.S. market by 2010, although it has not specified which models.

New security for Maruti cars

Maruti Udyog is set to introduce the immobilizer system across all its models to add security to its products. Though immobiliser is more common in western cars for the sake of cost in Indian immobiliser fails to find a place for a long time. Losing of cars increased proportionally to the increase in car population also stolen vehicle recovery ratio is very low in India. Hence security system is necessary for Indian cars though there is no regulation for making it mandatory.

How the system works

The device, called iCATs (intelligent Computerised Anti-Theft system) works on the principle of multiplexed communication. Under this system, a transponder – inbuilt into the car key – carries a unique electronic identification and a secret code that digitally communicates with the engine computer via a controller. If the secret code matches, the engine starts and in case of a mismatch, the electronic circuitry does not let the car to start, thereby preventing the car from being stolen.

impact on price..

The new device will increase the cost of all Maruti cars that drive out in the next few weeks and the company plans to pass on the hike to the prospective buyers and the hike will be in few thousands.

Security system in other Indian Cars

While Ford’s Ikon, all models of Toyota except the e grade cars, Hondas Civic and CR-V already have immobilizer fitted into it, the other anti-theft device called the keyless entry is present in Honda City and Accord and is optional in Toyota vehicles or the remote-centre locking as is present in Hyundai’s Verna, Sonata and Elantra.

But beware ‘no system is foolproof’ and park your car in safer place.

Bahrain GP

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa held off the challenge of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton in the Bahrain Grand Prix to win his first race of the season.

The Brazilian led throughout but was pressured early and late in the race by Hamilton, the first man to take podiums in his first three Grands Prix. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was third after challenging Hamilton mid-race.

BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld was fourth, holding off a challenge from the struggling McLaren of Fernando Alonso. The result leaves Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton in a three-way tie on points at the top of the world standings, with Massa five behind. Massa needed a good result in Bahrain after disappointment in the first two races and there was no repeat of his poor start from pole in Malaysia last Sunday. He led comfortably into the first corner, but could not shake Hamilton from his rear-view mirrors during the first part of the race. By the time of Hamilton‘s first stop for fuel and tyres on lap 19, the Ferrari was still only around a second ahead, but the stops changed everything. Under new rules that force drivers to use two different types of tyres during a race, both men changed to the softer rubber at their first stops. But Hamilton found his McLaren lacking grip on the new tyres and Massa began to pull away. From pressuring the lead Ferrari, Hamilton now came under pressure from Raikkonen.

The Finn had spent the first stint stuck behind Alonso, but after passing the Spaniard during the first pit stops he set about trying to make good the damage. Just as in Malaysia, though, Hamilton defended like a veteran, and despite making a final stop three laps later than Raikkonen the Englishman managed to rejoin the track still in second place. “I struggled a bit on the new tyres, the balance was not very good,” Hamilton said. “We got back onto the hard tyre [for the last stint] and we were able to keep up the pace.” Back on his favoured hard tyres, Hamilton quickly pulled away from Raikkonen and began to cut into Massa‘s 10-second lead. He pegged it back to five seconds before Massa responded. Hamilton continued to attack, but the Ferrari was able to comfortably hold him back until the end. “The results in the first two races were not what I expected,” said Massa. “Something was missing. But this time we put everything together. I’m really pleased.” The same could not be said for Alonso, who found his McLaren even less to his liking in the second stint than did Hamilton. The world champion later complained of grip problems, saying he had “no confidence” in the car and after his first stop he quickly came under pressure from Heidfeld, who grabbed fourth place with a brave move around the outside of the McLaren at turn four on lap 31. Like Hamilton, Alonso picked up some pace in the final stint, but although he caught Heidfeld, he could not pass him.

Sixth place went to the second BMW Sauber of Robert Kubica, who was followed home by the Toyota of Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella’s Renault.

Jenson Button’s race ended on the first lap when he spun on turn four after being clipped by Scott Speed, who had been hit by one of the Spykers.

Red Bull’s David Coulthard had a better day, battling up from 21st place to seventh before unfortunately being forced out by a driveshaft failure. Fellow Briton Anthony Davidson lasted until lap 53, before he was forced off trailing smoke.

Honda Shine Vs Suzuki Zeus

Battle for the berth..

Honda and Suzuki are one of the respected manufacturers in Indian automotive industry. After conquering the car market both have turned their eyes to world’s second largest two wheeler market – India. Suzuki partnered TVS and had produced good motorcycles like ‘shogun’ and Honda has been giving life support for its local partner Hero and Hero Honda has been the leader. Both have decided to go alone and tap the booming two wheeler market. Honda entered the market earlier and has become an important player in the scooter segment with dio, Eterno and activa. Honda’s unicorn is one of the top seller in 150cc segment. Suzuki made it entrance last year and currently offers 125cc bikes heat and zeus. Suzuki plans to launch a 100cc scooter soon that will take on Honda’s activa. The battle between Honda and Suzuki is a never ending one. The titan’s shine and zeus XCD fights for a berth in 125cc segment.

Engine and gearbox:

Honda shine comes with a powerful engine, only Yamaha gladiator and Honda shine have a power output 10+ (in bhp) also Honda shine has the highest torque in 125cc segment. Honda brand this engine as ‘optimax’ which is named to explicitly convey from shine you can expect maximum pickup as well as mileage. Actually this optimax engine is a scaled down version of the Unicorn’s 150cc motor. Optimax engine features multi mapping CDI, tumble flow combustion chamber, long intake pipe and connecting tube, CV carburettor, two-way Air Jacket and a pulse exhaust system. The engine is mated with heel and toe shift operated gearbox – four-speed and shifts all up.

Suzuki zeus is build for city commuters, it is the least powered engine in its class. Zeus makes 8.7bhp@7000rpm even most 110cc bikes make this. All aluminium, air cooled zeus engine breathes through twin valves. Zeus is one of the few bikes in the market that do not feature the more contemporary constant velocity (CV) carburettor. One more special with zeus is its peak torque of 10Nm kicks in as early as 3500rpm which means zeus demands lesser gear change hence perfect bike for city ride. The Zeus’ gearbox is five-speed and follows the well known popular one down, rest up shift pattern. Finally, shine is powerful while zeus has creditable torque. Shine is faster than zeus and also shine offers a combined mileage/fuel efficiency figure of 58kpl more than Suzuki zeus which offers 54kpl in combined conditions.

Styling and Engineering:

shine.jpg Clear lens indicator and aerodynamic front cowl gives shine a stylish look. Two tone shades, neat graphics, and chrome plated muffler are added design elements. There are no forced cuts, no sharp edges, just clean lines. Shine derives most of its design cues from its sibling Unicorn, rear cowl and front fairing is such examples. Honda shine has standard features such as switchgear, fuel gauge and speedometer. Other than Shine’s neat tank to seat flow and ‘Primary Kick.’ which allows the user to kick start the bike in any gear, without going through the hassles of finding the neutral gear, there is nothing to celebrate. Alloy wheels are absent in Honda Shine.

suzuki-zeus.jpgFrom the front zeus looks beauty with a unique headlamp fairing and a attractive visor The front alloy wheel mudguard sports an arrow-shaped front half. Exciting stickers and ‘S’ decal on the 12L fuel tank makes zeus a worthy competitor in fashion shows. In the rear the zeus makes you bored. Zeus offers best in class engineering with gear indicators that will help newbies, soft and simple palm grips, shining chrome bar end weights- to arrest vibration, wider rear view mirrors – will provide clear rear vision, switch gear, engine kill-switch, twin horns in addition to the standard push to cancel indicator, pass light flasher. Black and white speedometer and tachometer with yellow indicator makes it easy to read. No engineering is flawless, zeus handlebar locks on only one side instead of both. In styling both the bikes are not so magnetic but in engineering zeus scores more than shine.

Ride and Handling:

Honda claims shine features cutting edge technologies such as strong yet flexible diamond frame and Ergo Tec (Ergonomics and Technology) design. Both these enable offers superior absorption of shocks & vibrations thus providing excellent ride comfort & stability as expected on Honda bikes. Even though Honda shine features three step hydraulic suspension the useful tuff tube (reduces the incidence of puncture) affects the smoother riding.

An ergonomically designed, stepped up seat gives decent support and together with the raised handlebar offers an upright riding posture for the Zeus user. Though the bike is lengthier the ground clearance of zeus is shorter than many of 125cc bikes, Suzuki can claim that this reduces the saddle height of the bike making it more suitable for shorter Indian riders. Zeus chassis is a single down tubular member; zeus features the same tubular swing arm instead of popularly used rectangular swing arm which makes handling easier. Braking is via a 240mm disc in the front and 130mm drum in the rear.
Both the bikes are superior in handling but Honda is little ahead in the race.

Price and Verdict:

Suzuki offers warranty for 2 years or first 30,000kms for zeus (not much impressive when others offer 3 years) and zeus is priced in the band of Rs42,725 and Rs46,326. Shine is priced in the range of Rs40,945 and Rs45,844. Honda’s characteristic smoother engine, greater handling makes shine a better vehicle than zeus. But both Honda and Suzuki has to produce brand ambassadors such as splendor for Hero Honda, pulsar for Bajaj and Apache for TVS to get a greater share in Indian two wheeler industry and to get the confidence of Indian customers.

Current and future products:

Suzuki currently offers 125cc bikes zeus EU, Zeus xcd and heat. Suzuki plans to launch a 100cc scooter soon. Honda currently offers eterno, activa and dio in scooter segment and 125cc shine and 150cc sporty unicorn in bike segment. Honda plans to enter 100cc segment and it will also launch fuel injected Shine FI soon.

Hyundai’s answer to Honda Civic

new elantra in Civic’s kingdom…

Honda Civic is the largest seller in the lower D segment and is the ‘Car of the Year 2006’. The style and the features it offers makes civic invincible and even once the best seller – Toyota Corolla is selling in meagre numbers now. Whether it’s Toyota or Mitsubishi or General Motors, the manufacturers have to revamp their strategy and have to roll out new models to compete civic. The same is the case for India’s second largest car manufacturer – Hyundai. Hyundai’s existing Elantra fails to match the much stylish Honda Civic. To stay in this hot segment, Hyundai has to bring India a worthy competitor – Hyundai has launched the new Elantra in western markets and the right hand version of new Elantra is already offered in countries like Australia. So, we can expect Hyundai new Elantra soon in India too. Will Hyundai’s new Elantra match Honda Civic? Let’s see

Generation by generation, a car usually evolves slowly as the technology under the nameplate gradually improves. But in a single stroke, the new Hyundai Elantra has leapt ahead, and now it’s right in the mix with sedans such as the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla.

Engine and Powertrain:

The new Elantra will feature a more powerful 2.0L, CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) engine which pumps out a maximum power of105KW (143 PS) and a torque of 186Nm@4600rpm. The new Elantra will be 16PS more powerful than the now available Elantra. Existing corolla or civic is less powerful when compared to new Elantra. The new Elantra may also feature a more powerful diesel engine. For the new Elantra Hyundai may source the same CRDi engine which powers the recently launched Sonata Embera CRDi. Sonata Embera’s 2.0L, CRDi with VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) develops a max power of 142PS@ and a torque of 323Nm@2000-2500rpm. The new diesel though same displacement offers increased power and torque. But will the increase in power come without a bane? Hyundai Sonata Embera CRDi engine response is relatively dull and don’t produce the expected response in 500 – 1500rpm range which means a tad tiresome ride in the city. Hope Hyundai will tweak this CRDi engine before fitting into India’s new Elantra. A 5-speed manual transmission will be offered as standard, a 4-speed automatic as an optional for the petrol variants. Six speed manual may be used to derive power from diesel Elantra.

Design and Styling:

existing-elantra.jpgside3.jpgfront2.jpgrear3.jpg

Photos:Existing elantra/new elantra side/front/rear

The 2007 Hyundai Elantra has been totally redesigned. Now, for the first time, the Elantra features handsome styling with nice lines. New Elantra features a much wider horizontal grille replacing the existing vertical one. Wraparound headlamps and new triangular integrated fog lamps gives the new Elantra a modern look. Side lines starting from the headlamps flows like a wave and reaches the neatly gelled tail lamps. The tail gates have become smaller to accommodate wider tail lamp cluster. The inbuilt rear indicators which are placed in the boot and steppe body coloured bumper are notable design additions in the new Elantra.

Comfort and Engineering:

Passenger’s Zone:

The Elantra has become wider by 50mm and taller by 30mm with a minimal reduction in overall length. The increased size has been used to good advantage inside the spacious cabin; not only that, there are storage compartments galore. Previous-generation Elantra owners complained about interior storage space, so Hyundai made sure the redesigned model addressed this concern. Storage compartments are abundant. In addition to the large glovebox and adequate center console bin, Hyundai provides a purse hanger on the dashboard, a sunglasses holder in the overhead panel, a tray just forward of the shifter and convenient to the auxiliary input jack, generous door bins with integrated bottle holders, and dual rear map pockets. There are also two covered bins: one in the top of the dashboard and one just below the climate controls. The center of the back seat has a nice fold-down armrest with cup holders. Even though the new Elantra has ample boot/trunk space when you move the rear seats forward for more cargo space, Elantra’s pass-through area from the boot to the rear seat is too small to your accommodate larger objects because of Elantra’s new ‘c’ pillar design.

Driver’s Zone:

Utilities and accessibility:

The driver faces a simple, functional dash, with legible instruments, two 12-volt outlets and everything where it should be. The air conditioning has big, translucent buttons, while the high-mounted audio head unit, a single CD with an input jack (in the centre console) for an MP3-WMA player, uses a simple, conventional layout. The blue backlighting of the gauges has a youthful spirit, and makes the driver feel like it’s a cool car. The arcs of the speedo and tacho are a thin blue line, with red needles pointing the way. Below the three climate control knobs there’s a small companion to the glovebox, and below that, forward of the shift lever, there’s also an open storage area. There are two cupholders behind that, and a double console under the driver’s elbow.

Ride and Handling:

Elantra’s new electronic power steering may be terrific at low speed hence easy parking but many western auto journalists feel it is very light at high speeds. New Elantra requires 10.33m to make a circle. This all-new Elantra has also been engineered to a high standard. Its chassis is 49-percent more rigid than before (9% stiffer than even that of the Toyota Corolla), and this translates to a quieter ride and better handling. The new Elantra has the requisite suspension hardware – a MacPherson strut front-end and a sophisticated new multilink rear layout. The steering wheel is height and reach-adjustable. Elantra new design ensures you a clear vision around the car which is aided by wide side mirrors and wrap-over rear seat head restraints.

Safety and pricing:

ABS (Antilock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) will come as standard in this saloon. Especially with a very light steering, Elantra’s driver will find ABS a very useful system. Dual front airbags, energy absorbing steering column and adjustable head restraints will give Elantra’s occupant additional safety. Finally, Hyundai has offered unheard type of warranty in western markets i.e. 5 years/96000Km for bumper to bumper coverage and hoping the same in India too. One of the world’s best seller – Hyundai Getz has failed in India due to its higher pricing in and Maruti SX4 due on May, I believe Hyundai will reasonably price its new offering.

Maruti

Overview:

Maruti – Suzuki still holds more than 50% of Indian car industry, but unlike 19th century it has been restricted to a small car leader in the 20th century. The advent of other majors like Honda, Toyota and GM has resulted in creation of new definition for mid size cars in Indian automotive industry. The already existing players like Tata, Hyundai and Ford has absorbed the changes and is coming out with competitive products like indigoXL, Verna and Fiesta. But the market leader have left the boat and restricted itself to small car. Now Maruti want to revive its fortune in this segment with its new Baleno – the SX4 sedan. SX4 is the critical product for Suzuki not only in India but also in US where it has lost its edge. Let’s have a look at the SX4 sedan exhibited in recently held Geneva Auto Show and Newyork Auto Show and how the SX4 will be carried to India.

sx4.jpgside2.jpgsx4-se.jpg

Engine:

Maruti Suzuki is looking at a wide variety of engines for its SX4 sedan. For the new Baleno, the current Baleno’s all-aluminium 1.6-litre 94bhp engine may be used. However, it is also likely that the latest-generation 1.6L, VVT (Variable Valve Timing) motor which develops power of 107bhp will be used if the new Baleno is to compete with the Optra and even the Corolla. Suzuki may bring its international SX4 to India as well if it fits the 2-litre 143bhp petrol engine (Suzuki SX4 sedan will feature the same engine in US) which will make the new Baleno to compete Civic and Corolla. Coming to the diesel, Maruti may opt for the same 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine that is currently being offered with the Swift. A Suzuki version of Fiat’s 1.9 Multi-jet diesel will also be an option, Maruti will seriously consider but this would increase the price substantially and push the new Baleno into Octavia territory. With this wide variety of engines on the line (if offered) Maruti will target City, Fiesta, Aveo, Verna and much hyped Logan on one hand and saloons like Civic, Corolla, Optra, Elantra, Octavia and Mitsubishi Cedia on other hand.

Design and Comfort:

Exteriors:

sx4arches.jpgsx4-rear.jpgsx4side.jpg

While most of the mid segment cars are more or less equally powered, the deciding factor has become the styling and comfort. Suzuki has to position the SX4 sedan against popular stylish machines like Honda civic, Toyota Corolla and Nissan’s Sentra (Nissan Sentra not available in India) in US and other markets. Hence Suzuki has to be different to stay competitive. SX4 is created by the same Suzuki team that won many awards all over the world with the Suzuki Swift. Success of swift lies in its sporty nature, Suzuki has chosen the same for its SX4 sedan. Suzuki’s design team claims SX4 will give performance in a stylish and head-turning package. Similar to Hyundai’s Verna SX4 too has shorter overhang making it a comprehensive package. The SX4 sedan has an aggressive and a sporty wedge shape front fascia and grille. New headlamp cluster creeping into the bonnet is an example of Suzuki’s contemporary styling. Its muscular and athletic stance is enhanced by its arched fenders, while the body features a low, rising waistline and large, triangular-shaped windows forward of the front doors to emphasize the car’s great traction and dynamic performance. From the back though the SX4 is not an eye catching design, larger tail gate and rear bumper will enhance its practicality. Shortly, exterior is elegant and dynamic.

Interiors:

The stylish design continues inside the SX4 sedan. Suzuki’s traditional high-roof design is effectively used to give a spacious interior. Unlike the now available esteem, SX4 sedan has wider door openings which provide the driver and passengers with superior ease of entry and egress, also the large cabin proportions and command seating position optimize visibility to enhance driving confidence and control. Suzuki claims SX4’s cabin design allows comfortable seating for five, with more overall interior space than the segment’s volume leaders. The SX4 sedan also features theater-style seating for the rear passengers which means rear seats are higher than the front seats and front and rear occupants enjoy a wide field of vision whilst the different height makes communication between the front and rear passengers easier. Looking at its dimensions SX4 may not be a wide body car but will offer a good space because of its taller nature. With legroom of 913mm and shoulder room of 1341mm at the rear, at least we can hope unlike swift which has bigger exterior dimensions which is not replicated in interiors (Swift loses to getz in interior space) SX4 will replicate its interiors.

For ride and handling..

The Swift won many awards for its responsive and very forgiving handling. Many features of the SX4 sedan are inherited from the Suzuki Swift, including aspects of the suspension and brake systems. Suspension- McPherson strut with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-sway bar at the front and torsion beam live axle with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-sway bar at the rear. Power steering and power brakes will be offered as standard to control 17” alloy wheels. As usual suspension and handling characteristics will be tweaked to suit Indian conditions.

Safety and Engineering:

Following the suspension, safety and special features will be suited for Indian conditions. It will not be tweaked as suspension special features and safety devices will be thrown away if it exceeds the Maruti’s pre-determined price. The rigid body structure consists of a reinforced cabin structure nestled between front and rear crushable zones. The rigid body structure will also facilate good ride quality on poor conditions (welcome character for Indian roads) Three-point seatbelts for all occupants and advanced safety features such as ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) and dual SRS airbags are expected in higher variants. For protection in side collisions, there may be front and rear side door impact beams. As a security system, an immobiliser that reduces the risk of vehicle theft will be fitted.

Following are featured in SX4 sedan shown in Newyork auto show, Upholsteries and trim on Indian SX4 will depend on the determined price.

sx4-instrument.jpg

sx4-driver.jpgseats.jpg

The rounded dashboard works with the high roofline to make the interior feel more spacious. A functional and high-tech center panel offers large, circular controls flanked by modern aluminum- colored trim (expect plastics in India). Instruments and controls are backlit by contemporary, high-tech red lighting, and the ergonomic design of the instrument cluster and dashboard provides clear views of the meters and easy access to the controls for a true driver-oriented cabin. The sporty cockpit theme extends throughout the cabin with a dark interior that features black cloth for a look that is both sharp and refined. The dials and controls are functionally laid out to provide convenience and ease of use. The audio system comes with chic night-time illumination. The automatic air-conditioning system of higher specified models has lights around the dials to make them easier to see in the dark.

Price:

SX4 is expected to hit the Indian roads by May. Depending on trim level, pricing is expected to be in the range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh if SX4 is to match Logan, City and Fiesta. However, if Maruti wishes to enter the Saloon market the prices will be pushed northwards. Cheap spares, low running costs, easy servicing, good fuel economy and reasonably low price are the peculiar features of Maruti’s car. You can expect it in SX4 too
