Yamaha’s YZF R1 and MT 01 in india

powerful bikes soon in india..

Bike majors like Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki are all looking at some big muscle models for India. After the latest notification by the commerce ministry simplified importing of bikes in the 800 cc-plus category, MNC motorcycle companies are looking at imported big bikes by 2008. The government’s decision to allow the import of motorcycles above 800cc is the result of an agreement between India and the US whereby the US eased norms for the import of Indian mangoes and India-harmonised emission norms on bikes above 800cc with Euro 3 standard, paving way for the import of high-end motorcycles like the Harley-Davidson. Whether it benefits Harley or not, the three japans majors – Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki certainly will be the beneficiary. Yamaha has been charting plans for India and might use this opportunity to build its brand. Here’s the Yamaha plan!

YXF-R1 and MT-01:

Yamaha Motor India (YMI) has decided to launch the 1000cc YZF-R1 and the 1670cc MT-01 in India by the end of this year. The company will import these ‘super bikes’ making it among first bike makers in the country to take advantage of the government’s recent announcement to allow the import of motorbikes over 800cc.

The R1 has already been homologated and approved by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), and sales expected to commence once the company receives the first lot of imports from YMI’s parent. “Yamaha’s YZF-R1 and Yamaha’s MT-01 are not meant for business but to create an image” the company said. Yamaha plans to sell few dozens of YZF R1 and MT 01 initially.

Yamaha’s new MD and his plans:

Ishikawa took the helm at Yamaha Motors India in January 2006 and soon realised it was important to give what the market expects from Yamaha. Ishikawa is the one who had turned around a sluggish Thailand operation into a profitable one in just three years. Ishikawa’s plan is to find a niche that may suit the direction he had temporarily set for the Indian operations. Market studies and surveys were initiated. ‘It is then that Yamaha started conceptualising a new product and creating a strategy for the future. By September, Yamaha India had decided on two new products.

Ishikawa also does not dismiss the option of getting the RX100 brand back in India. He said this could be part of the larger brand building strategy for YMI. ‘We are looking for that kind of a motorcycle and that could be part of our larger strategy,’ he said. Our strategy is not Hero’s and there would be no room for negotiation on that,’ he added. Ishikawa has formulated a vision that looked at altering the business strategy, way of operations and quality levels. Externally, new marketing strategies, including that for dealerships is being worked on. The Yamaha Motors India management has asked for Rs 800 crore from its parent. The company might not get the entire amount, Ishikawa said, who expects around Rs 600 crore to come by June this year.

History of Yamaha India in Ishikawa words:

Yamaha, which made its foray into India 22 years ago in 1985, along with Escorts, the Indian experience has been somewhat mixed. In its 15-year partnership with the Indian tractor maker, Yamaha had made good inroads into motobike buyer’s psyche by offering them sporty, performance driven products. The RX100 was, and continues to be an iconic brand among bikers. However, the company had to discontinue the product after the government banned production and sales of two-stroke motorcycles. Up until the RX100 days, when the government allowed two stroke bikes, Yamaha had a decent market share. As the company moved into four-strokes, it moved beyond the niche segment, a perception which seems to have stayed in the customer’s perception. Like most other motorcycle manufacturers then, Yamaha went the majority way — targeting the commuter segment and offering them products that had low initial cost and good fuel consumption. Here’s Ishikawa view on Yamaha India. ‘We went Hero Honda’s way and so did others. However, the image for Yamaha was different from that of the majority. I believe there was a gap between what Indians wanted from us and, in turn, what we gave them,’ Ishikawa said. The company got caught in the volumes game and developed products that lacked Yamaha’s genes, Ishikawa explains. Yamaha’s performance in the market place dwindled, with market share falling to 3.6 percent in 2005-06 from 8.4 percent in 2000-01, when it parted ways with Escorts to go alone in the Indian market. In its 15-year partnership with Escorts, Yamaha had sold approximately 2.5 million motorcycles.

  3. 3 Kishore Naidu Jul 16th, 2007 at 10:35 am

I think it will certainly be Rs. 8 lacs plus given the cost of of $11000 for R1 in western markets and a 110% imported duty on the same, it works out to be very expensive to my knowledge. Anyways we should have a fair idea by this year end!!!

    Cheers!

    can you guys even google?

    ‘they won’t charge import duty?’
which island are you on mate?

    sorry vivek,
you can’t be the first one in india to possess an r1.
they’ve been here since about 8 years ago.
    as individual imports.

infact, bombay bikers held a drag here in pune and we had about 25 R6′s and 10 R1′s.

the market price for an individually imported r1 in mumbai is about 9.5 L, for an R6 about 8.5 and for a GXR-600RR 8.

    The R1 costs $5K ?
    Their website says $11k.

And the `110% import duty is for personal consumption.
    Not for retails.”

All said and done, neither of these are going to be under rs.10L

Mlge for the R1 is about 14-16kmpl city, and 20kmpl on a highway. for the R6 its a couple digits higher.

AND if they ‘homogenize’ the bike, its not really the race winning R1.

and Nimesh, a little bit of research goes a long long way. so does keeping shut when u don’t know what u’re spouting and are arrogant enough to learn.

hope the gyan came in useful.

and frank, i’m a rider not the spleein bee champ so spare me and deepak some slack.

  14. 14 dinesh Aug 29th, 2007 at 12:58 am

    namrat,

go to your orkut account. and search for the names of the bikes in there. You’ll be amazed to see how many of them already ARE IN INDIA.
Most of them in del, bby and bnglre.

    cheers mate.

  29. 29 Prakash Sep 11th, 2007 at 12:56 am

Greeting all you guys who are planning to buy R1. I am also a great fan of R1. But frankly how many of you are made for this bike. how many of you, who are going to shell out more than Rs.10L for these mechines which is actually worth it for its capability. but who is going to use atleast 25 percentage of it ability in the tarmac.

I use my yamaha ybx for daily needs and when ever i got a chance to cruise around and I enjoy every bit of it. I can only dream for this baby.I am a biker deeper from my heart. If you just have the fat vallet and not the thing i just said above dont buy it. dont buy it just as a showpiece. dont disgrace the name R1.

This msg is not for deepak, its for Mr Frank, who tried to insult Deepak for his english.Mr.Frank don’t try to get so frank to insult any Indian, as our mother language is hindi not english ,the way we speak english is just obliging the english B’coz there are many countries who don’t have any respect for english in the european continent itself.don’t forget that english is the most confused language on the earth with not a single classified pattern in speaken or writing. so next time think before you insult for the language.

    MT01 and YZF R1 in November 2007:

Yamaha finally decided to roll out its flagship sports bikes – the 1,000 cc MT01 and 1,600 cc YZF R1 by this november in India. The MT01 and YZF R1 will be available only through the Yamaha’s selected dealers in metropolitan cities.

“Going forward our aim is to become a dominant player in the Indian two-wheeler market by rolling out high-end or executive segment bikes. Besides, we will also offer two superbikes MT01 and YZF R1 to the Indian consumer by November this year,” Yamaha Motor India Managing Director Tomotaka Ishikawa told.

    true Yamaha in India:

Yamaha’s unveiled its plans for the Indian market, Ishikawa said the company would not launch products in the entry-level segment and would bank primarily on the executive and high-end bikes to capture its targeted 10 per cent share in the domestic market by 2012.

Finally some good news for the biker community… But there seem to be some dreamers here… with or without english skills… they defintely are not logical !!

Firstly, I agree with Dinesh… why dont you guys google it… & you’ll knw the price of a GENUINE R-1 in seconds…
Its a minimum of $ 11,000/- in ANY given country… even japan, where they are manufactured !

Secondly… There’s the tax factor… and from personaly experience I can tell you that its 180% once you include all the hidden taxes, cess etc ( And I hv’nt even mentioned the bribes :-) )

Thirdly… What abt tax ?? even at a bare minimum of 12 %, this should amount to a Lakh of Rs MINIMUM..

Alternatively… you could do what I just did… Found the ph no of the dealer in my city ( available off the web… it even lists the persons name ) and hear it directly from them !!

I was told that the Ex-showroom price would not be below Rs 12 Lakhs for sure… and that altho they are expecting them in Nov, its very much tentative…. given the pace things move could even be Dec-Jan-Feb

Trust that shd put an end to what seems like a pretty useless debate…
For all you dreamers here… atleast you can continue dreaming with a sense of reality

For a GENUINE buyer who does’nt want to wait that long… and can afford to pay immediately…
    …read on

I am selling my R-1… No, I am NOT some dealer… rather a bike enthusiast myself.
I bought my bike brand new from a showroom in Dubai when i lived there, and brought her back
with me when I moved here 2 months back
    I ride the 2006 R-1… yellow-black & white… 50yr anniversary LIMITED edition…
Only abt 200 bikes made with this colour / specs
Am attaching a link for those interested in a pic… copy/paste the below url

    Condition : Spotless… Not a SINGLE scratch
    Price : Rs 9 Lakhs… Non-negotiable

Send me an email with a few details on yrself…
Just so tht i knw yr not one of those dreamers to waste my time on…

We can take it from there… Dont forget to mention yr contact details inc ph no

    Cheers

  36. 36 Zak Sep 17th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

Forgot to mention…. The bike is registered in Bombay & has a smart card regn, rather than an RC book etc… which eliminates any chance of the regn being bogus

  37. 37 Paul Sep 19th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

    Hey Zak

In the event that you find a buyer in Bangalore, pls could you help me out in selling my R1, 2006 Raven. Done 2000kms, n the price is for 8.75L, and its negotiable.

    Thanks
    Paul

    FRIENDS

THE BIKE IS VERY SUPERB ,BUT THE AMOUNT THEY FIXED FOR R1 IS TOO HIGH.

BY PUTTING LITTLE AMOUNT MORE WE CAN BUY MISTUBISHI LANCER.

WHY YAMAHA COMPANY IS NOT PRODUCING THAT BIKE IN THEIR INDIAN BRANCH SO THAT THE TAX AMOUNT CAN BE REDUCED.

THEY SHOULD SET ONE PLANT FOR YAMAHA R1 IN THEIR EXISTING PLANT IN INDIA ,SO THAT THEY CAN PRODUCE GOOD BIKE IN LOW RATE

  39. 39 Frank Sep 25th, 2007 at 11:48 am

this message is for Ozair Ahmed, see the posts from STORMSHADOW & HARRY………i’m getting support dude. ok, our language isn’t English. i agree. but how can we Blog or post in HINDI ? so i told him to improve his english. ok? its not insulting……….ok, Ozair, gimmie a break dude, we should be talking here about the R1. eh?

  40. 40 Mahesh Murthy Sep 26th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

    Folks,
It is heartening to note tha Yamaha is finally sitting up and taking notice of the many of the desparate folks who are waiting for a “Real Bike” from Yamaha. After giving India the RD 350 and RX100 which are worshipped even now by the Bike enthusiasists all over India, its high time that Yamaha came out with an equally Iconic bike for India. I had Rx100 and my friend an RD350 – nothing even comes close to the feeling of riding a RD350.

It is quite pathetic that Yamaha still brings out the Puny sub 150cc bike for the Indian Markets. I hope good sense will prevail and Yamaha will release a couple of superbike models atleast by Dec07.

I am ready to shell out a 2-3lacs for a decent and legal superbike. Most of the ones available in India are carrying papers which cannot be termed legal.

Anyways -If anyone of you readers get to know more about Yamaha’s R1/R6 or MT release in India,do leave a note here. How get on the list for buying one of these with Yamaha would be a interesting question to be answered.
    Cheers.

    THIS IS FROM INDIA TIMES

Yamaha bikes @ Rs 10.5 lakh
[ INDIATIMES NEWS NETWORK ]TUESDAY, DECEMBER 04, 2007 12:41:52 PM

NEW DELHI: Yamaha Motor India has today introduced two high-end bikes, YZF-R1 and MT01 at Rs 10.50 lakh.

YZF-R1 is the flagship model of Yamaha and is powered by a 998cc engine that develops a power output of 176 bhp @ 12,500 rpm with a torque of 112.7 Nm @ 10,000 rpm.

The cruiser style model MT01(picture below) is powered by a 1.6-litre engine and has a power output of 88 bhp @ 4750 rpm and a torque of 150 Nm @ 3750 rpm.

    See Yamaha MT-01 in pictures
    See Yamaha R1 in pictures

Yamaha has appointed dealers in New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmedabad who would deal in these big bikes. The dealers and all their staffs have been imparted special training to deal with these high powered bikes. Even the buyers will be put through certain trainings before they set off in the R1 or the MT01. The dealership network will be increased to 15 by 2008 and 50 by 2010.

Yamaha, which has a market share of only 3 per cent in the Indian two wheeler market, made it clear that they are not looking at volume sales for these two bikes. The company hopes to sell about 25 units a year and will import both the models as completely-built units (CBUs) from Japan.

Earlier this year, the government allowed the import of motorcycles with engine capacities over 800cc.

Yamaha’s competitors such as Honda and Suzuki have also announced their plans to sell premium bikes in the country.

JUS SPOKE TO A DEALER AND THE BIKES HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED AT A PRICE TAG OF 10.5 LAKHS

AND THEY COST 12.5 ON ROAD..

    SO ENJOY….!!!!

  63. 63 BUSA Dec 9th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Well, the good thing is that prices of 2nd hand imported SBKs should become less. Currently 10 year old 600′s go for 4.25lacs, which is like 48% depriciation.

THE R1 IN BANGALORE COSTS 11.70 ON ROAD… 20 DAYS FOR DELIVERY OF BIKE…

  66. 66 Joshua Dec 26th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

    Hi guys,

For all of you in Bangalore….
The price of the R1 is Rs. 1054640. And the on road price is Rs. 1200000. There is a R1 for display in the showroom which is near The Forum “ORION MOTORS”.
The Guy in the showroom said that they’l take special classes for all the buyers (God know what classes he was talking about) and he also said that we’l have to pay 5 laks for booking and we’ll get the bike after 30 days. (There are also finance options available)

Man whts the point. U get a brand new R1 for 9 laks illegally n whts the point in buyin it from the showroom.
I Think yamaha has to do sumthin on it and reduce the prices.

I’ve been waitin for this bike for a long time (My Dream Bike) and now its arrived but whts the use.

Hope n pray that the prices drop very soon, so that i can grab mine.

    Regards,
    Joshua

Hey Jonathan, I would say that we Indians have handled most of the western gadgets better than the westerners, let it be Computers or Fighter Planes..I ride a 500cc and we still worship RDs which killed Americans like anythin. So let time answer all your queries and I believe you people will get your answers in exactly the way you deserve.

    Hello friends,

I want to import a Yamaha R1 for my use and I have recieved quotatios from sellers from Singapore and Indonesia.

    But the concern is
1). Which one to buy i:e New or Used?
2). Am I allowed to import a Bike (without any customs’ hassles)?
3). What will be the DUTY payable to Indian Costoms?
4). From where should I buy i:e country?

If you can please help me out, from step 1 to step last, to import a bike.

    Thanks.

    Hey Frank,Harry.
I am new to this website and was going through the old posts.
This is in ref to posts by you guys on 23/25th july 07.

Seems you guys are from west. Well that doesnt give you a license to be apathetic and demeaning. If Deepak doesnt know english, you dont know hindi/bengali/marwadi/rajasthani etc etc, so what, big deal.Knowing a language is no assurance of your intelligence or superiority. You should be considerate as a human being.
How come the rest of the folks just took it???

I will not give my heard earned money to these greedy politicians.
Can I afford the bike ? Clearly yes.
Will I buy it? Clearly not!

Tell your ministers that if they are too greedy they will not make ANY money from you.
Tell Yamaha, so they can have a chat with the reigning class. They surely have a bigger leverag than we have.
No VAT, no fuel, no income tax from labour you have performed on servicing the bike. Zip.

I can imagine paying 6 lakh, but not more.

I agree with German. This is a con by Yamaha in India. You can buy tw0 spanking new R1s for Rs 12 lakhs in Europe!I wouldnt pay more than Rs 6 Lakh in India. Passion for bikes is fine but shelling out 12lakh is pure show boating and sheer stupedity. Dont buy this bike. Either Yamaha sell it at a fair price or they dont.

  113. 113 Sumon Kar Dec 31st, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Was checking costs of these imported bikes. Dealers are saying that 60% import duty are being slapped on these Suzuki and Yamaha 1000cc machines. Seems to me its not 60% but about 100% tax.Hence I can afford two of these in Europe with the price I have to pay in India.Sometimes more than 130% when it comes to Ducatis. In the customs book it says 60% import duty on brand new machines but looks like dealers aint following that rule. Has anyone else noticed that? Its a con and some people are getting rich mugging people in broad daylight. People have to make a choice. Luv for bikes or let dishonest people getaway with robbery. Some hard working honest people aint rich and they save up every penny to afford these machines and its not fair. Well I wont buy these bikes in India. I luv them and have the money, but I cant encourage robbery.

So to all those who think that the tax imposed is so that the govt makes money… its not so..

the tax imposed is to support the local manufacturing industry which the govt is afraid cant compete with the foreign industry.. if they cut the tax on imports the japanese industry will demolish the local industry..

the govt stands to make more money in just taxes if they cut down taxes on account of the number of units to collect tax from…

ideally indian industry would get off their asses, be more competitive and create better products so that they can compete with the japanese manufacturers…

btw am an indian living abroad (grew up in india) and ride a cbr600rr which itself is more power than I can use on a road with freeway speeds of 130kmph…. r1 is overkill unless u have a track to take it to.
