The Logan is Here!

Overview:

Logan is one of the cars which have created much anticipation in Indian automotive industry. Logan is one of the cheapest car ever produced by an european manufacturer but when comes to India Renault is able to save 15% of the estimated cost. Mahindra has helped Renault not only to cut down the cost but also to launch ahead of Maruti Suzuki SX4. Mahindra Renault has launched Logan in India with three engine options and both the partners have great expectations for the Logan. In India already the mid segment market is dominated by Hyundai verna, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai accent, Honda city, Tata indigo, Maruti baleno and entry level sedan Ford Ikon and Maruti Esteem. Will the Logan give its peers a jitter? Let’s see…

Engine and Fuel efficiency:

Indian petrol Logan is fitted 1.4L, 75hp and 1.6L, 84.5hp engine whereas the diesel is powered by 1.5L, 65hp CRDi (Common Rail Direct Injection). Instead of 105bhp 1.6L engine Renault has choosen less powered 84.5bhp, 1.6L petrol engine for India also the Indian diesel variant is de-powered by 5hp than its European counterparts but still torquier than most of its indian peers. But petrol logan is less powered and less torquier when compared to Fiesta, City, Accent, verna and Indigo. Mahindra earlier created an entry level SUV segment with its bolero and I believe it intends to follow the same with petrol Logan. Mahindra’s petrol Logan in sub mid segment category will take on match Ford Ikon and premium hatchbacks like Getz and Swift. At the same time its diesel Logan will take on true mid segment cars. Company officials claim that the Indian version of Logan is a fuel-efficient vehicle. The company claims it will return an average of 16 to 19 km per litre in Common Rail Diesel engine and 10-13 km per litre with petrol engine.

loganfront.jpgfront11.jpgrear11.jpg

Design and Dimensions:

Already the European logan is the most spacious sedan of its class, the indian logan is wider by 7mm than its European version. Really Mahindra Renault Logan is the wide-body car if you want a spacious car then you can blindly choose Logan, no other car in its class can match its spacious nature. But Logan will struck with Indian roads because of its 155mm ground clearance. I don’t know why if luxury makers like BMW is raising ground clearance and tweaking suspension for its Indian variants, then why a low cost maker like Mahindra – Renault brings the same vehicle to the deterring Indian roads.

Engineering and Pricing:

Logan comes in 1.4L GL/GLE, 1.6L GLS and DLE/DLS 1.5 diesel variant. GL is the base variant while GLS/DLS is the premium variant. Features such as rear defogger, power windows, glove box light, trunk room light and rear head restraints are found only in premium variant. Logan’s much praised air conditioning will face a tough battle with Indian summer. LCD display Instrument cluster features gauges which is seen in all cars, a computer which calculates average consumption, average speed and distance to empty is only for premium drivers.

logan-int.jpg logan-int-1.jpgrenault-logan-trunk.jpg

Safety and Security:

For this money logan offers airbag for driver apart from the honeycomb dashboard which protects you in case of front impact and cross member at the rear which protects you in case of rear impact. Every manufacturer should follow this kind of safety feature and must protect Indians as Europeans. Remote door locking and central locking are only for premium buyers. Remote fuel lid opener is standard in all variants but there is no remote boot control even for premium customers.

Colours:

The Logan will be available in six colours, namely Toreador Red, Fiery Black, Sahara Beige, Mist Silver, Turf Green and Diamond White (as opposed to our prediction).

Pricing:

The price of the 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre petrol versions of Logan will start from Rs 428,000 (ex-Mumbai), while the 1.5 litre diesel versions will be available in the range of Rs 547,000 and Rs 644,000 (ex-Mumbai). The ex-Delhi price of the Logan will start at Rs 435,000 to Rs 576,000 for the two petrol variants and Rs 554,000 and Rs 651,000 for the two diesel variants. Logan is very reasonably priced and is sure to give trouble to other manufacturers. At present other manufacturers denied announcing any price discounts but expecting this in near future.

Verdict:

Yes, the true champ is here! The 1.4L petrol Logan may lure customers of Ford Ikon and 1.5L CRDi diesel variant will give Ford’s, Honda and Tata a Jitter. Regarding the 1.6L petrol logan Mahindra –Renault may target Fiat Palio stile 1.6L sport hatchback, but to match other mid size cars like Honda city it has to revamp Logan to get a decent response. It is true that Mahindra – Renault has brought India a great car but I believe they have made it in a hurry – the poor ground clearance may spoil its ambitious plans. Also it is evident from www.mahindrarenault.com I am able find different dimensions for the same logan

Expected Launches:

Ford will launch new Fiesta which will feature a 1.6L Duratorq oil burner which will generate 90PS@4000rpm and a torque of 204Nm@1750rpm to take on Logan. But the real battle for the Logan will be with SX4 sedan from India’s true leader Maruti.

    Nissan – Mahindra -Renault JV(Joint Venture)&Upcoming launches.

Mahindra & Mahindra has recently announced plans to set up a massive new car plant near Chennai with Renault and Nissan. The new 400,000 units- per-annum facility would be set up at a total cost of about Rs 4000 crore.

Though the trio will share the greenfield facility each has its own ambitious plans for India. Nissan and Renault will crank out independent marketing strategies in India to avoid confusion at the retail end. Maruti could be Nissan’s Indian marketing and distribution partner because of the close links between Nissan and Suzuki worldwide.

The models at the chennai facility..

Renault plans to expand on its Logan platform (code L-90) by manufacturing variants like the Logan Steppe (code R90), as well as a premium hatchback for the B-segment (code B90). Other spin-offs include an SUV, crossover (code H79) and possibly a coupe as well. However, Renault does not plan to make the sedan version of the Logan at the Chennai plant, since this model is already in production at Nashik currently, as part of its earlier joint venture with Mahindra. Significantly, Renault is also planning to make the latest version of its Megane sedan model (which is due in Europe by end- 2008) at the Chennai plant for the Indian market. Renault expects to make around 80,000 units by 2009, with volumes increasing over time.

Nissan on the other hand would be starting off with its small hatchback model (X02A) and then the large hatch (X02B), with volumes expected to touch 1.95 lakh and 1.3 lakh respectively by 2012. These models will come with a range of engines including 1.2 and 1.5-litre petrols (XH5) as well as a 1.5-litre diesel (XH2)

According to Dr Pawan Goenka, president, automotive sector at Mahindra, “Nissan is looking at making a variety of cars at this new facility”. Nissan is also believed to working on a new-entry luxury sedan for India in collaboration with Samsung Motors (which is part of the Renault Group), which would go up against the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.

Mahindra itself is expected to make an entirely new generation of utility vehicles at Chennai. Based on a monocoque chassis design codenamed Model W, this will be the first model to roll out. Meanwhile, its current range of body-on-frame models like the Scorpio and the upcoming Ingenio would continue to be made at the existing plant at Nashik

    400,000 units include:
    Renault
    Logan Steppe (R90)
    Logan Hatchback (B90)
    Logan SUV
    Crossover (H79)
    Next-generation Megane

    Nissan
    Small hatch (X02A)
    Large hatch (XO2B)
    New Corolla-fighter sedan
    XH5 petrol engines – 1.2, 1.5 litre
    XH2 diesel engine – 1.5 litre

Nissan India may also produce a 1.3lakh small car to compete Tata’s 1lakh car

    Mahindra
Model W – New generation of monocoque SUVs

But once the Indian market picks up more speed, Renault-Nissan will want go it alone. Mahindra also has plans for it. This is true as Anand Mahindra told “All JVs today are half lives”

The country’s largest automobile maker Maruti Udyog plans to launch a family sedan — codenamed SX4 — as early as May.

The 1.6-litre car, developed by Suzuki, will be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show later this month. Sources said the car is likely to be priced between Rs 7 lakh and Rs 8 lakh and will be aimed at buyers looking to upgrade from smaller cars to one that suits the whole family.
The SX4 will be touted as Suzuki’s second world car after the Swift. “Suzuki and Maruti want to prove they are not just good compact car makers but can make better and larger family cars,” sources said.

The Baleno, which Maruti now sells as a family car, will be slowly phased out once the new car’s sales pick up. The family sedan segment, also known as the A3 segment, accounts for about 15 per cent of the market and is priced at between Rs 5 lakh and 8 lakh. “The new car will be at the top end of this segment.”
Sources said the SX4 has not been developed on the Baleno platform and “was a brand new auto platform”, implying that engineering processes were different and may involve changes in plants for manufacturing.

The new Maruti SX4 sedan will be built at its new manufacturing facility at Manesar, sources added. Maruti, which commands a 42 per cent market share in the domestic car market, opened the company’s fourth auto plant at Manesar last month.
Suzuki, which owns 54 per cent of Maruti Udyog, had said at that time the new factory will make one lakh cars a year, and scale up to three lakh within three years. The company also plans to triple diesel engine production at the plant to three lakh units by the end of the decade besides making auto components and motorcycles. It will invest up to $2 billion in India during the period.

About the ground clearance being 155 mm is supposed to be with Laden weight i.e with 5 people sitting. The guys at the show room told me what the other companies advertise as ground clearnce is with unlanded weight so in that terms we can take logans clearance around 170(that what the sales guy told me). I did a test drive and also booked one the diesel high end one. I could easily go over speed breakers.
believe me the engine is silent and the gear box is really good.

Hi…persons who are looking for a practical, spacious, no nonsense, value for money car, you must go in for Logan – Autocar has given the verdict recently for logan – 4 Star rating to match with verna, fiesta rating. You just cant compare logan to Ikon or esteem or accent, as these cars are getting dated. You have a clear 50k saving compared to fiesta. You get almost everything in 1.6 petrol except electrically operated rear mirror and remote boot opening. The drive is class of its own. Interiors are not posh as that of accent or fiesta but much bearable. Looks might not make people turn their heads neither the ergonomics but this can be overcome with huge spacing, quality drive and value for money. Overall a value for money car.

LOGAN is Hummer for Indian buyers.Logan is lesser in price than City,Fiesta,Aveo & Baleno but offers the most space and comfort in its class.According to ‘Autocar’ Logan’s boxy shape gives rise to terrific space that can rival a Toyota Corolla.

Auto industry sources say that Mahindra-Renault’s first car Logan, has got a lukewarm response. But Mahindra Renault says that it has got 3,000 bookings for the car. It claims that 1,500 units have so far been sold in May. It added that 70% of sales are from its diesel variant. However, to generate more demand it is taking some new steps, reports CNBC-TV18.

The booking amount for Logan has been slashed by up to Rs 40,000. Mahindra-Renault is also planning more variants of Logan. It will also be available across 100 dealerships by November.

Logan has failed to meet market expectations, the built quality is poor and the wide body is nothing to boast about, SX4 is pretty much of the same size and price but is much better built interms of quality of interiors and comfort.
