Facing the competition..

The sedan segment has become more competitive because of the entry of new players like Maruti SX4 and Mahindra Renault Logan. Especially, the Mahindra Renault Logan 1.5L CRDi and Swift 1.3L Diesel(because of the heavy interest rate, part of the demand in the lower-end of the mid-size market has moved down to the hatch segment) is giving Indigo a tough battle.

Tata Motors in February launched the Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) diesel engine version of Indigo sedan and the Indigo Marina estate range.

new heart for the base Indigo..

Now on May 17th,Tata Motors has announced the launch of its entry level common rail diesel (DICOR) offering in the sedan range with the Indigo LS version(the base variant).

The silent, 32 bit microprocessor based 1.4 litre, 70 PS engine with a high torque of 140 Nm offers the most contemporary diesel engine technology, featuring high pressure multiple injections, use of hydraulic and low friction mechanisms ensuring better combustion and more fuel efficiency.

The 16-valve engine has Dual Overhead Camshafts, which enhance the high end power output of the engine and a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), which minimises the turbo lag at lower engine rpms for improved driveability.

Attractive DICOR:

The Indigo DICOR LS version (the base variant) comes equipped with Heating & Air-conditioning as well as Power Steering. This model also features beige coloured interiors along with body coloured bumpers, and is being offered in six attractive colours. Now with the Indigo LS DICOR at Rs.5.25 lakhs, it becomes the country’s most attractively priced common rail diesel offering amongst sedans.

The Tata Indigo range has been a best seller in the entry mid-size segment since its launch in December 2002 and has sold over 150,000 cars till date.

    Tata’s Line-up:

    New Sumo:

Tata will launch an upgraded sumo, the sumo which was launched in 1994 was once tata’s flagship product. But as Toyota, Mahindra, Chevrolet conquered this segment sumo lost its glamour. Tata’s new sumo will inherit the existing sumo’s welcomed characteristics and embrace new technologies and contemporary features. The major change will be under the hood – new sumo may get safari’s 3L dicor engine or a 2.2L Dicor engine. Wheelbase, leaf-spring rear suspension system, larger rear width and side facing third row seats that has access through the rear door will be retained. But the new sumo will shed boxy look instead new sumo will get more curves and lines. Sharper lines, V cuts from bonnet to grille to lower part of bumper, larger headlamps are borrowed from Tata’s TL sprint pickup. New sumo will also get larger wheels and a larger tail lamp cluster. New sumo’s registration plate is housed on the tailgate. New sumo will have a ground clearance and the result is the high- mounted headlamps. With all this changes sumo has become more masculine in its new avatar. Facelift is carried to interiors as well; the new sumo will get the dash from the safari. Sporty dials, attractive door pads, better quality seats and a neat centre console with double row of rounded push buttons for the Tata’s new sumo.

    Indica V3:

When indica gets the DICOR engine it will also get a facelift in design. The indica V3 gets its design cues from Tata’s concept car indiva showcased in 2002 geneva auto show. Larger headlamps, bulbous bonnet and larger grille are the changes at the front. Larger tail lamps would now go all the way up to the roof line for more appeal. The indica v3 will have provisions for airbags and it will conform to European safety norms. The new indica V3’s interiors, quality and finish will also match international taste. Believe it! Indica V3 will be more spacious than the much spacious indica v2. As indica V2 still rules, Tata may co-produce the indica V3 along with the indica V2.

A new engine for Tata’s safari:

A new engine is set to power the new safari – the 3.0L engine will pave way for the 2.2L DICOR engine which develops around 140hp. Currently this engine is used for export markets. As customers has complained about the narrow powerband of the current 3.0L engine, Tata decides to power the safari with the new engine. A few changes will be made in front grille and bumper fro the new safari.

    Tata indica V3 update:

Tata new indica V3 will be unveiled durind january 2008 auto expo. The new Indica V3 will have new lights, grill and a brand new suspension. While it will sport the 1.3 litre Fiat diesel engines, the new Indica V3 is also likely to be much wider, have more interior room and improved safety features. While it’s not clear if the Indica V2 will continue, sources indicate that the company may retain the base variants at lower price points.

Sources indicate that the new car may have a different name and the engines are being developed by Fiat, Tata Motors’ JV partner. While a car’s lifecycle is around 8 years, Indica has been around since 1998. Sources indicate that this change was much needed as the Indica and Indigo sales have been under pressure over the last few months. The company along with its dealers has been offering discounts to reduce inventory. While pricing details are not clear, sources indicate that it will price the new Indica around Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh.

    Sir,
I have bought my indigo xl dicor classic on 01/06/07, just because it is having 200mm more length than the current indigos, plus the so called state of the art Diesel CRDI motor under its hood, and the bad luck surrounded me from that date, my car has just clocked 11000 plus kilometres till date. I don’t have suitable words to curse Mr. Ratan Tata, who is showing big dreams to poor Indian car buyers, that I have visited concord motors, chennai workshop numerous times as per their records and out of record. I don’t know about other tata motor dealers around, but sincerely, and surely I will say that tata motors is surviving just because of these after sales team only. At the end I would like to say that “TATA MOTRS IS CAPABLE OF ONLY MANUFACTURING INDICAB AND INDICAS. THEY SHOULD QUIT DREAMING ABOUT DEVELOPING LUXURY CARS, LIKE WHAT THEY CLAIMED BEFORE AND AFTER THE LAUNCH OF INDIGO XL DICOR GRAND AND CLASSIC.
