New security for Maruti cars

Print This Post Print This Post Email This Post Email This Post

Maruti Udyog is set to introduce the immobilizer system across all its models to add security to its products. Though immobiliser is more common in western cars for the sake of cost in Indian immobiliser fails to find a place for a long time. Losing of cars increased proportionally to the increase in car population also stolen vehicle recovery ratio is very low in India. Hence security system is necessary for Indian cars though there is no regulation for making it mandatory.

How the system works

The device, called iCATs (intelligent Computerised Anti-Theft system) works on the principle of multiplexed communication. Under this system, a transponder – inbuilt into the car key – carries a unique electronic identification and a secret code that digitally communicates with the engine computer via a controller. If the secret code matches, the engine starts and in case of a mismatch, the electronic circuitry does not let the car to start, thereby preventing the car from being stolen.

impact on price..

The new device will increase the cost of all Maruti cars that drive out in the next few weeks and the company plans to pass on the hike to the prospective buyers and the hike will be in few thousands.

Security system in other Indian Cars

While Ford’s Ikon, all models of Toyota except the e grade cars, Hondas Civic and CR-V already have immobilizer fitted into it, the other anti-theft device called the keyless entry is present in Honda City and Accord and is optional in Toyota vehicles or the remote-centre locking as is present in Hyundai’s Verna, Sonata and Elantra.

But beware ‘no system is foolproof’ and park your car in safer place.

    * Maruti Udyog Ltd, the country’s largest car maker, on May 17th said all its models ranging from M800 to the latest sedan SX4 will cost more by up to Rs 4,300 on account of equipping the cars with a new anti-theft device. The immobiliser device branded as iCAT (intelligent computerised anti-theft system) will be factory-fitted. The price hike ranges between Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,300 (ex-showroom) for the various models.

    * With the introduction of iCATs, the original set of keys becomes even more important and in case of loss of key, only the original second key would be able to start the car. If the second key is also lost, the third key would have to be ordered from the company.

    * With the new security system Indian car will be secure as if the western counterparts. ICICI Bank has offered special interest rates for cars equipped with it. Insurance companies too are offering a rebate of Rs 500 on insurance premium for cars equipped with iCATs

    Black box for your car:

Mumbai based software enabled security systems company, Micro Technologies (India) Ltd, has developed a special device called vehicle black box or “Micro VBB” to counter the menace of car theft. Micro VBB is a security and messaging anti-theft device and also works like a data recorder on the similar lines of an aircraft black box. Sensing any intrusion of vehicle doors and immediately communicates it to the registered user`s mobile through SMS. Owner messages back to immobilize the car. VBB consists of GSM technology inside it, which acts as a communicator between user and vehicle. On being alerted of an intrusion, the owner can SMS `Arm` to the box. It will immediately lock all the doors. To locate the actual position of the car, owner can send SMS `Find`. Within couple of minutes the location is given. Higher-end models also have the facility of two-way telecommunication between the owner and driver. If the driver`s credentials seem to be doubtful, then owner can SMS `Eoff`. Car engine will get switched off. VBB comes in four different models – Economy, Classic, Elite and Navigator cost ranging from Rs 9,000 to Rs 19,000.

In India nearly 36,000 vehicles worth Rs 115 crore are stolen annually. Only about 15,000 are traced, often in dilapidated condition, with many components missing.

No immobilisers cannot be fitted to old cars. If it has to be done then the cars Engine Management systems must be replaced(only by the manufacturer).
