Hindustan Motors is mulling efforts to change its 60 years old Ambassador as its sales is not good nowadays. And so,its generous boot has been detached to four metres that qualifies it to be a small car in order to make it more favourable. It features the same rounded hump but with a sharp truncated rear part.

It will sport the same existing 1.5 litre diesel engine which pumps out a power of 35.5bhp and a torque of 13.7kgm.It is expected that the Hindustan Motors will update this motor significantly in order to speed up the performance. It could even feature a turbocharger to meet the latest emission standards.

It will make its debut at the end of this year or at the Auto Expo in January 2012.HM can expect to save around Rs 30,000 and this benefit of cost is likely to be passed on to customers.

i don’t seem to see the reason why HM is keen on persisting with the ambassador. the car in its diesel form does not have more than 6% market share in the commercial vehicle segment. that also in west bengal & kerala. whatever changes are done, will be be able to entice the new generation of retail buyers who have been spoilt for choices by hyundai, maruti, tata, ford, etc. the main usp of the ambassador is its space, but with families going nuclear where is the need to carry 5/6 people overtime you go out and also with the financial freedom of the family members (read husband & wife boh working) each member needs his/her own conveyance. moreover how are you going to make your vendor/s invest in new tooling for better fit & finish in their parts when your volumes are so less and there is no guarantee of returns. will HM be able to guarantee that the new assembly line investments will result in a better build product and no post purchase welding of joints will have to be done.
sincere advise, get rid of the model, only then HM will be able to change the mindset of the buyers and even its own staff working in the assembly line and elsewhere.
