Skoda is going to launch Fabia – a compact car in India by the end of 2007.
The first generation fabia has sold about 15lakh in Europe and other countries. The world premiere of the new generation of the Skoda Fabia will take place at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2007 subsequently it will be launched in India. From the looks of it, the 2007 Fabia seems to have a lot in common in terms of design with the new Suzuki Swift. Here are the few scoops about the car and its video
Czech site “Auto” has got THE on tscoop he second generation Fabia model. They managed to catch on tape, a semi-camouflaged prototype performing test runs.
In Europe the fabia is well known for its attractive design,the large amount of space, and above all, the generous amount of comfort ans is offered in various segments as Fabia sedan, Fabia combi and Fabia RS.
Engine:
A total of seven engines for the new Fabia,Four petrol and three diesel engines will be available in Europe. But only two variants of diesel and petrol are likely to be offered in india (since only engines under 1500cc for diesel and 1200cc for petrol falls under the tax band of 16%). These engines are already available in Romania and Czech market.. Engines will be borrowed from Skoda roomster-another successful model from Skoda, for Fabia.
Mileage figure in Czech by similar vehicles powered by these engines (though fuel consumption varies for vehicles I believe these figures will help you to evaluate the engine).
Diesel engines:
1.4TDI PD/51 KW —-18.4kpl
1.4TDI PD/59KW —-19.1kpl
Petrol engines:
1.2 HTP/44KW —– N.A
1.2 HTP/51 KW —–14.7kpl
abbrevation:HTP-high torque performance TDI-Turbo Direct Injection PD-pumpe duse(unit injector)
Very important for India (and for Skoda) will be the smallest of these engines offered. The three-cylinder 1198cc 12-valve petrol engine puts out 60bhp but this engine’s 11.4kgm of torque at a low 3000rpm
The 1422cc turbo-diesel will be Skoda trump card though. A three-cylinder version of the Laura’s PD motor, it puts out an impressive 79bhp and an even more impressive 19kgm@ 2000rpmof torque which can be matched only by Maruti swift. So it will go head-on with the Swift diesel, Tata indica and the soon-to-be-launched Getz diesel. To be competitive apart from the performance and pricing, Skoda has to improve its customer satisfaction (it occupies 9th rank in JD power CSI study) before this launches.
Design:
According to Skoda, new Skoda Fabia will be of 3992 mm in length (well under 4000mm to enjoy tax sops) 1642 mm in breadth and 1498 mm in height Fabia is largest in its class. The effectively usable space offers the occupants more space both in the front seats and in the rear. The boot has a basic capacity of 300 litres as against 232 litres in Maruti swift and, when the rear seats of Fabia are folded down, it will increase to 1163 litres.
The world car got the opportunity to ride the new generation Fabia has come up with following facts.
“The design of the new Fabia expresses clearly emotional characteristics. The fresh design with its strongly accentuated radiator grille, the integrated headlights which are both dynamic and harmonious, and the sideline which expresses both agility and value combine to make the new Skoda stand out clearly from its competitors. This is achieved by means of the white roof, available on request, and the four different wheel designs in the programme. The space is exceptionally generous in spite of its compact measurements and, in the rear; the amount of headspace provided is impressive. The ergonomic seat position for the driver is a matter of course in the new Fabia, while the higher position of the seats affords a better view of the bonnet and also makes entering and leaving more comfortable. The new Fabia offers more space for knee and foot space for all occupants, setting new standards in travelling comfort. Numerous functional improvements have been realised in the interior. The operating elements for the ventilation and the audio unit have been set high up in the centre console. This makes it possible to operate them without being distracted from what is happening in traffic”.
The following facilities will be offered in new Skoda Fabia, but in India these facilities may not be available for the sake of low cost or it may be offered as an optional one.

• Two-tier boot cover-which can be installed at two different heights increasing the flexibility and functionality of the boot.
• Curve halogen projector headlights (option)
• Cornering front fog-lights (option)
• Seven different wheel designs, four steel and three alloy
• Diesel particle filter for the 1.4 TDI PD/59 kW and 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW diesel engines
• Attractive rear lights in Skoda’s trademark C-shape
• Higher seat positions for driver and front passenger that afford a better view and more comfortable access
In the rear, a child’s seat can be affixed with a top-tether belt which limits the forward movement of the upper part of the child’s seat in the event of a head-on collision.
Price:
Fabia may be priced at around in the price band of 4.5-6lakhs (10-15 percent more than the Getz). What you will get for the premium will be quality levels previously unheard of in this segment, plenty of interior space and solid European build and safety. The Fabia is sure to give Hyundai getz and Maruti swift a few sleepless nights at the very least. It is certainly ahead of the game when it comes to interior space, quality and choice of engines
Further launches:
Volkswagen will invest $ 530 million in pune for a new plant, that will work in conjunction with sister company Skoda India’s existing facility at Aurangabad and the plant will be operational by 2009. Pune plant will have a production capacity of 1,10,000 units and the group will bring other locally produced VW brand. Skoda will bring india the Fabia RS which is expected to have 150-plus bhp in addition to Volkswagen launch of Polo – which will compete with Maruti swift, Hyundai getz and Chevrolet spark (soon to be launched) and Passat sedan- costs about 30 lakh which will compete with Mercedes and BMW in India in coming years.

Skoda’s Fabia has been testing indian’s patience for a long time. Here’s official word on Fabia launch, Mr. Karsten Bogun MD of Skoda India said “Skoda will bring the Fabia by the end of this year”. Regarding the reason for the delay he added ” This was due to Skoda’s desire to launch the latest version and localise it for the manufacture in India.
Price:
Skoda wish to position its Fabia above the B segment (Maruthi Swift and Hyundai Getz).Skoda will create a new segment for its Fabia Hatchback. Possibly, Fabia may encounter Honda’s small car Jazz in the new segment.

Volkswagen’s Indian line-up:
* Volkswagen parent company of Skoda and Audi is developing a small car for Indian market. The small car ewill be a variant of Fox and will be powered by a 1198cc engine generating 66PS@5400rpm and a torque of 112Nm@3800rpm. Volkswagen small car may also feature a diesel engine to take on Maruti swift. Not only the small car is on the charts of Volkswagen but also a ‘C’ segment sedan ‘Jetta’ to take on corolla and civic. Jetta also may be offered in petrol and diesel variants. For both Volkswagen’s small car and Jetta we have to wait till 2008 or even 2009.
* Volkswagen will roll out a luxury car the ‘passat’ to compete against BMW 3 series and mercedes C class. Volkswagen Passat is powered by 2.0L diesel engine which generates 170PS of power and 350Nm of torque and a 2.0L petrol engine which generates 150PS of power and 200Nm of torque.

Skoda fabia is really a good car, no doubt, but the biggest question remains is the cost of the maintanance and spares.
Any body who purchases a car with in 6 L, the cost of maintanance iam sure it will be huge in comparison with that of Swift or any Hyundai, leaving TATA a part where in they compromise for build quality etc.

Termed internally as the ‘fabia readiness programme’, the firm has worked on its logistics, supply chain, and vendor and distribution network to ensure customers get timely deliveries once the car is launched, said Skoda Auto India managing director Karsten Bogun.
“Most of these dealers, especially in the smaller towns, will be trained with the Fabia in mind,” he said. The Fabia will be the fourth model in India from the Skoda stable.
Bogun said he expects demand for the Fabia to come from both the metros as well as smaller cities. The Fabia will be made at the Czech car maker’s Aurangabad facility with an initial local content of 10-15%.

According to Fabia’s own comparison, the U-VA seems to have more legroom than the Fabia – which is strange considering Fabia looks bigger.

About flexible boot space, the tray can be moved to two separate positions.
There is a car to suit every pocket, to match every need. One must study a little before deciding. In hatchback section Fabia makes excellent buy even at slightly higher price
Finally, Fabia launches all four models at the auto expo. Entry level trim is Active, then there are Classic & Ambiente. Elegance is top of the line.

Ridiculous price tag for a small car. Looks boxy. May be little more spacious than swift. Interiors are disappointing. Not huge improvement from Swift. Low ground clearance. Combined with poor service network & costly spares of Skoda, Fabia will be a huge flop.
Just visited the Skoda showroom and only the Classic diesel version is currenlty available. This will set you back by 7.25 lakhs (on road price), quite expensive for a small car.
Guys relax… I’ve taken a test drive of Fabia but it disappoints me compared to my Ford Fusion
The engine lacks power; the interiors are better in the Fusion; dont know why Skoda’s used inferior plastic for the Fabia and yet priced it at 7 lakhs.

I booked a skoda classic but I am having problems with the dealer Mahavir Auto Diagnostics, Hyderabad. They are asking me to buy the insurance from them compulsorily. It seems they have a deal with skoda that customers buy the insurance from them. I am getting the loan from another bank and they too insist on buying their insurance. How can they torment their customers. I am in a dillema as to what to do as I have already paid the booking amount.
If one can believe in quality and has seen it all (swifts, Uvas, SX4s, Dzires, Getz etc etc), the Fabia is several notch up than anything close or even the higher segments in terms of build quality, space , features, ride & handling. This super-hatch is simply sensational and a great value for money.
I came across some expert’s comments on the engine capacity not upto the mark or not as powerful and lacks top speed. Let me assure you this. For next several years and beyond, Indian driving conditions would allow you that kind of roads to drive at that speed. It is extremely well designed to carry you at 170KMPH and that is practical enough.
Secondly, the lower capacity enjoys a tax holiday from Indian Govt. and hence the cost is 10% lower.
With fuel prices going up, the larger capacity engines will soon face resistance (as in SUVs world wide).

Car is good looking and the features are too too attractive when it comes to safety. I had only one problem with the dealer, they initially said it comes with four speakers for their audio system, but later(once i purchased my car), they are claiming it comes only with two speakers and two tweeters in front and they promised only rear speaker provision. Beware of this fact!!!, but car is extremely good….
This is the sad story of a disgruntled customer, who has the misfortune to have a Fabia 1,2 reg. no – TN 09 AX 9740
The issue is threefold – the car has a faulty engine, the service folks cannot report it and cannot sort it out and worst the senior most folks in the organization cannot do anything about it and if they give a guarantee it is of no use. On the roll of (in)fame from Skoda are all these people who gave us lukewarm responses or never responded –
Ramesh, Karthik and Sudhir, Srinivas and Dixit, Nitin and Joseph, Gerald and Borgen K, the MD himself
In the first week of March 2009, the car had excess vibration in the engine when it was idling.On the 4th of March we ent it to serviceing to (Gurudev Motors, Madras).
He had it for 1 month and allowed factory folks to see the car, take photos and do some jugglery that we have no visibility into. No one could find out the problem or have the courtesy to tell us what the issue was, we started doing daily trips and calls and nothing worked. In deparation we called and spoke to customer care and Rahul Kulkarni said in a mail –
“ We would also like to honestly inform you that, even we are surprised by this exceptional concern and therefore have taken up this matter personally to investigate into the cause for immediate resolution. We would like to apprise your good self that our Service Engineer has inspected the vehicle and necessary job work is being carried out under his supervision. It is therefore we submit to you that, you clear all your apprehensions on your concerns, be assured on the Quality of our products and services.”
This standard answer, mind you took almost a WHOLE month to get. You would think that the issue would have been resolved quickly but that was not the case. While we heard nice things, we didn’t get responses to the following questions –
1. what exactly was the problem in the car
2. how you propose to address the problem
3. a clear confirmation that you are not touching/dismantling the engine of the car.
4. why it took 1 month to diagnose the problem in the first place.
Our worry was what if the engine would sieze when we were driving on a highway or something else of a similar nature happen. Not being told the real issue made things worse. Dissatisfied with vague answers and a refusal to change spareparts or the engine( after all this happened within 4000 kms and within 6 months of having bought the car). As you can see , we have patiently waited for more than a month) despite safety being at stake we spoke to Mr. Joseph, Executive Secretary to the Skoda M.D
By now, it was difficult in not having the car and we were tired of trying to find out why there was a delay, we just wanted the car back and since there was a failure of the 3rd cylinder in the cylinder head and opening the cylinder head is as good as opening the engine and we demanded the replacement of a new engine and not just mere replacement of the cylinder head.
By now, it was April and the MD’s secretary forwarded it to “Ramesh, Karthik” ; “Sudhir, Srinivas” ; “Dixit, Nitin” Nitin.Dixit@skoda-auto.co.in, more new people for us to fight the battle with! Too many cooks spoil the broth, 6 days NO REPONSE!! We wrote a mail and got a “will respond” again from the Secretary and not the Service dept guys
Finally we got the car back after the 7th of April with no assurances for what was done and a vague commitment that it will not happen again. For what it’s worth the problem repeated, and on 14th of April the car went back to service for the same problem! We have a few more issues now, engine shuts off more often, the engine is sluggish and has lower power and of course the vibration is still there, what did SKODA do?
Moral of the story – Skoda’s customer service sucks and I am happy to have dissuaded 6 friends from choosing a Skoda and choosing a Honda City instead!

I apprised M/s Krishna Auto Sales Chandigarh, on 08/08/09 about the said problems, who agreed to look into the problem and assured that the problem would be rectified.
I must compliment the staff at Krishna Auto Sales Chandigarh for going out of their way to redress my problem. They have been very courteous “but I am Sorry to say that people at Head Office at Aurangabad are not at all interested in rectifying the problem, rather their attitude is callous and high handed .”
The hit and trial method adopted from day one leads me to believe that you yourselves are not sure what and how to arrive at the final diagnosis, short of changing and replacing the parts and then eventually sending software to clear the defect “have done nothing.”
Sir not only have I suffered mental harassment and huge financial losses, but have also been told in no uncertain terms by Mr. S.K Aggarwal that the defective car sold to me by your ESTEEMED COMPANY will not be replaced rather it may take 2 Year for it to be repaired and the losses incurred by buyers like me are of no consequences to the company. Further when I requested him to furnish me with the details of the MD Telephone No., Email Address , He categorically told me that as he was the sole in charge …………HIS WORD STANDS FINAL.
So where do I go from here ?????????????
