In 2007 alone two new premium bikes have been launched. As competition becomes tougher its hard to find the right products suits for you and more than introspection,comparison shows the true colour. We here compare all the 150cc bikes and dig out the pros and cons of the products. TVS apache RTR 160 included in the ‘battle b/n the beasts’ because of competetive price. Let’s watch the battle!
Design and Styling:
Whether its pulsar or unicorn or X treme or apache rtr or hunk every bike is either evolutionary or revolutionary in design dept. The black theme, aircraft type fuel lid and alloy wheels have become universal and it now features on all bikes. Though the basic design is not altered, pulsar has metmarphosed into a new bike with constant upgradation. Bajaj’s keen care makes the pulsar even to match the new generaton bike like apache rtr. But too much of pulsars in the road has started developing fatigue. Honda has always been conserative. Though unicorn styling is evergreen it cannot conceal the age. Also lack of contemporary features like LED tail lamps,digital speedo and gas charged suspension makes the unicorn outdated. Xtreme’s face(headlamp) inspired from unicorn fails to charm though it has sexiest back of all the bikes. Large LED taillamps, bulleted silencer mouth and horns like supportive split grab rails scores the credit. Racy design with neccessary racing stripes, chiseled tank, stylish engine cowl, petal type disc brake and leaf shaped rear view mirrors makes the RTR one of the best looker. Hero Honda finds a space even in this crowd. The recently launched Hunk blends the design of cruiser and racy. Red dial, analog clock setup adds extra charm to the Hunk’s macho look. Though Hunk has not achieved the best of both worlds it scores a lot. Of these bikes, Apache RTR, Hero Honda Hunk, CBZ X-Treme targets a niche market within the 150cc segment. Honda’s unicorn lures the conservative man. Pulsar 150cc which attracted the youth when it launched, now turns into a family bike.
Engine and Transmission:
This must be easiest section to decide, since three of the competetiors – Hero Honda’s Hunk,CBZ X-Treme and Honda’s unicorn shares the same engine. Unicorn’s 149.2cc was the least power producer yet it scores full points for its refinement. Unicorn’s engine develops 13.3bhp at 8000rpm and 12.75Nm of 6500rpm. Hero Honda offers the same engine with little more power(0.8bhp) for both the Hunk and the CBZ X-treme. Pulsar 150cc engine is one of the best engine made by the bajaj. The twin spark 149cc engine produces 14bhp at 8500rpm.
TVS apache rtr is powered by an 160cc engine which produces 15.2bhp at 8500 rpm and 13.1Nm at 6000 rpm. Clearly, Apache RTR is the best among the traits in terms of performance. Apache RTR has higher power to weight ratio 111.7bhp/ton.Apachian can push the redline even upto 12000rpm. The extra 10cc plays a main role for the RTR and it is the only bike in the segement capable of breaching the 110kmph mark with appreciable control. All the bikes in the 150cc segment breathes through CV carburettor, in India, Fuel Injection (FI) is yet to make a wave. All the bikes Pulsar, Unicorn,CBZ Xtreme,apache RTR and Hunk features 5-speed (1-down 4-up pattern) gearbox. Their way of functioning and design varies. Apache RTR, Hero Honda Hunk and CBZ Xtreme targets young customers and hence gear shifting is through toe levers. In Unicorn and Pulsar 150cc it is through heel and toe levers.
Fuel Efficiency/mileage:
While the Honda’s engineering makes the mill frugal for the Bajaj its twin spark technology and exhausTEC do the difference. Both the Bajaj Pulsar 150cc and Honda’s Unicorn consumes 1 litre to returns around 55kmpl in our combined city and highway drive. Hero Honda Hunk’s 150cc engine is integrated with advance tumble flow induction (ATFI) technology. This kind of induction helps the motor to burn the fuel more efficiently. Hence the Hunk has little edge over its sibling CBZ X-treme but only by a small margin(1-2kms). Hunk returns 51kmpl in our test drive. TVS apache RTR which topped the performance bar flips in the mileage dept as expected. It gives a mileage of 48kmpl.
Ride and Handling:
Power and Torque coming from the mill has to be put on the road intelligently. Considering the Indian infrastructure it is must for Indian bikes to have superior handling characteristics. Few years back Honda surprised everyone with its monoshock suspension,its light steering and single downtube frame with engine as a stressed member. The bike gives a planted feedback to riders. Though Honda’s commuter type seating offers good comfort to the riders, it hampers the Honda in scoring full points in handling section. Unicorn’s biggest loss is the CBZ X-treme’s biggest gain. X-Treme’s sporty riding position with raised footpegs and its diamond type frame helps to negotiate turns and quick directional changes. But X-treme become cumbersome to handle at low speeds espescially when you have to incredible turns in the traffic signal. Xtreme’s 240mm disc brakes offers the neccessary bite when you need it. Pulsar 150cc which rides on 17″ inch tyres is showing its age.But pulsar’s sharp braking makes the pulsar fit for the competition. TVS has equipped the apache RTR with everything to be jesse owen. Yes, it is the most athletic in the segment. Want to flick! apache RTR’s clip on handle bar, shorter wheelbase and lower saddle height will help you like anything. RTR uses different sets of tyres at the front and the rear(17″-front and 18″-rear), this setup really makes the difference for the RTR’s road stance. 270mm petal disc brake holds the bike at the press of the brake lever. Hero Honda’s new hunk inherits most character of the CBZ X-treme but the heaviest bike in the class along with the large claddings tends to intimidate while taking sharp turns.
Recently launched Hunk is the first one to feature Gas charged suspension from Hero Honda’s stable. TVS has been using Rectangular arm suspesion for a long time, other such as Pulsar and Hunk adopts it. Other than Honda’s unicorn and Hero Honda’s CBZ Xtreme, all the bikes in the segment features Gas charged suspension. Unicorn’s 3 way adjustable monoshock and CBZ Xtreme’s ride is on a stiffer side. Both the bikes transfers the vibration to the pillion. TVS MIG(Monotube Inverted Gas filled) offers better ride. Bajaj pulsar 5 way adjustable suspension set up is one of the softest. Hunk’s comfortable seating (with extra lumber support) and GRS makes it easily the winner in the ride quality. 145kg beast controls the vibration and rarely transmits. All these bikes except unicorn have handle bar weights to cushion your hands by reducing the handle bar vibration. But i have seen many of the bikers to remove the weights since it tends to hit while negotiating sharp turns.
Engineering and the goodies…
All these bike have trip meter,standard warning lamps and an analog tachometer in common. While Honda bets on quality, bajaj packs its bike with user friandly features to sell its bikes. Pulsar 150cc is the first bike to feature digital instrumentation and LED tail lights. Pulsar’s instrument panel is neatly laid out. Cable free speedometer is an another useful feature in the pulsar 150cc. TVS followed the bajaj’s way apahe RTR comes with LCD speedo analog tacho and LED tail lamp cluster. Apache RTR’s useful features includes service and battery indicators. The clip on handlebar which facilates varying the handle bar position is a must feature to be in all bikes.While the Xtreme features twin pod instrument, hunk and unicorn features hooded tripod arrangement.
Verdict:
No confusion here! the winners of this test are every bike enthusiast who pushed these makers to come out with bikes of international standard. Though indian market far from being compared to any western market. Our bike standards are growing day-by-day. Though R1 and Hayabusa are not made in india. Apache’s and Xtreme’s feature equally competetive design.
Coming back to our “battle b/n the beasts”, Bajaj pulsar 150cc and Honda Unicorn are already proven winners. Comfort factor and fuel efficiency of both the pulsar and unicorn are unquestionable and still the best in the category. But as new generation bikes like apache RTR, CBZ X-treme and Hunk are ready to take the customers to a new range of excitement, Pulsar and unicorn tends to give way to newbies. RTR’s robust performance, Hunk’s muscular styling and CBZ Xtreme’s exceptional handling characteristics cannot escape from the eyes of bike lovers. CBZ X-treme lacks contemporary styling and its stiffer ride quality leaves the race in the penuultimate lap. Also X treme is too pricey. Hero Honda has set right few of the short comings of CBZ X-treme at the same time inheriting the best of it. Hunks blends cruiser and racy theme nicely.Lack of powerful engine and absence of modern (yet practical) features makes the wrestler to lose against the athelete. Apache RTR with high performance engine, upswept styling and host of features rocks the 150cc class. The dearer price point also adds more value to the RTR.though it can improve its quality ad tweak its gearbox.
The crown for 150cc kingdom has been most voltaile and with the apache RTR FI, Yamaha’s and Suzuki’s 150cc bike are around the corners, i’m sure that a new(complete) set of bikes will be compared when we do it again in 2008.
Colour matters:
Whatever the bike you choose (depends on your indivual needs), colour matters most. Yellow matters most for the apache RTR. Bajaj Pulsar 150cc sells hot in classic black. Unicorn excels in red and Xtreme catches the eye in silver. Hunk becomes bull in black. Again this is subject to differ.

(I personally suggest if ur searching 150cc segment Bike go for Apache 160Rtr, its will give 48 Kmpl, Great look Great Performance its a new generation bike all in one word superb bike.)

Pulsar is the bike 4 u if r looking 4 a beast that performs in terms of power and speed…
If u need a bit more out of ur bike like reliability, comfort, stability at top speeds go for unicorn… it also delivers for a much longer period with its refined engine…
Any ways performance wise both unicorn and pulsar are almost identical…

Very soon a new contender will make everyone sit up and take notice. It will have the best looks and a 6 speed gearbox. It will be really fun to drive and also deliver the best mileage in its class. Hard to believe, then wait for the SUZUKI 150. Don’t know what it will be named but it will kick ass that’s for sure. Just a couple of months now . . .

i think honda unicorn is the smoothest and most comfortable bike i have ever rode..bcoz the engine is almost soundless and it is vibration free even at 95+ speeds.. if uhonda plans for a 180 version of unicorn sports it will bang of the ass of other bikes

Wanna go for a bike It could be Apache RTR 160 i think it is the best in the class of 150cc bikes.
i checked this after a long time. i own both uni and rtr..
correct the torque figures if uni please.. its wrong.. uni is 12.8 nm at 5500 rpm..
and rtr has loads of issues.. stay away from rtr if u need peace of mind..
tvs dont know to make good engines.. they wont even last for 20k kms..
uni is four year old.. its a great bike minus style and boring commuter stance.
before considering the winners of segment please know about every bike well.. even i can write a review like this just by looking at those papers and figures.your not even doing that properly considering what u posted on the torque figures..
first ride an apache rtr above 60.. see how it vibrates.. and they tell everyone that its the best bike..

i am about 2 buy a 150cc bike. i tried all the bikes.
1) Hero Honda CBZ-XTREME : ride comfort, speed, handling are too good. Mileage not the best but not an issue
2)Hero Honda Hunk : ride comfort, seating, handling are good. But no enough space for your girl friend 2 sit behind u!!
3)Honda Unicorn : Everything is fine with the bike, except for the tech specs like the digital speedometer, gas shocks and the styling is old and outdated
4)Bajaj Pulsar : Good looks, handling is too good, ride comfort is good,has all the technical specs u would like to have, mileage is good. only problem here is bajaj is maintaining cheap quality parts for all the bikes. See for example, the rear mudguard of the pulsar will move as if it is about to set loose at every speed breaker.
5)TVS APACHE RTR : everything is too good , but this bike is well fit for short persons. its not a good one for a 6ft tall or higher.
Seeing all the above , i opted for the Bajaj pulsar as the ride comfort, seating , looks, tech specs and mileage of the bike are good enough. Servicing is cheaper too compared to Hero Honda or Honda.And for resale you don’t have to worry about it for now!!Now you decide which one is better for u ??? ummmmm

Unicorn is a civilzed & decent all round peformer. Pulsar’s mean & stealth like looks gives a modern funky style & performance, but a tad low on quality (but insignificant & inconsequential). RTR Apache is for younger & short guys (less than 5′-8”) and looks ‘kickass’. Honda hunk is a mixed-reaction type and is not exciting as RTR or Pulsar. Like all kinds of girls around, boys have varying preferences. It takes all kinds to make this world.

Unicorn is really realy safe. Especially its breaking. Pulsar can never even dream of matching Unicorns breaking system… Unicorn rocks in this case…
CBZ-extreme and the Hunk seems to do good nowadays. May be they are, but in terms of life and continued performance, we shud wait. But X-treme wud definitely be promising in terms of speed, style and stability.

hey people that was a really good review of the 150 segment bikes…i guess he’s gone thorough of the bikes before he could have written off late there are pulsars everywhere…which implies that the bike has lost its charm, the eloquence it possessed. Fortunately for the other bikes its an added advantage, if you are a passionate biker then i would suggest that the performance of a bike matters most in driving the bike.
if the performance is better then the maintenance cost would actually reduce and therefore resulting more comfortable riding experience its just not the looks that make up a bike, the looks is an special ingredient for the bike not everything so it would be better to go for a bike with better performance…and the possibly best performance bike is undoubtedly Apache RTR 160(depends on the perspective of every individual)..so if anybody is interested in buying a bike go for Apache RTR 160 Fi.

last week i had the opportunity of riding an R15…let me tell the ride was the best ever i had till now in my lifetime..but i found the same number of disadvantages equaling the number of advantages the bike shows up
1. the bike has an awesome speed n performance u just cant beat it…since the speed goes up the mileage goes down…major disadvantage considering the rates of the fuel prices..
2. u meet up with an accident the insurance companies tend not to give any insurance for the fibre body..so think about this before ur gonna buy the bike with these two important points..again i request u all not to use such filthy language n please maintain ur dignity as educated youth…

Apache should return you almost 45 in roughest conditions. You can also have a look at cbz xtreme, it is a very strong bike. I thrashed it at 90 but only 250 cost. i purchased yamaha fz16 i find it is best in 160-150cc segment ,really its superb in all parameters of today’s biking,the latest trend…power of 15ps,all digital meter,widest tubeless tyres(rear radial),mindblowing pickup & fantastic balance even at the speed of 120km/hr..reasonable rates 70000/- on road…milage is 40km/ltr …but its all new no service yet so i m looking forward for atleast 45km/ltr milage…….
overall if u compare its UNBEATABLE.

i have tested all da above bikes in long and also in city..each bike hav its individuality.apachertr is not smooth in riding and looks are not up to mark.unicorn hav less pick up and good milage in 150 segment.hunk is also good and smooth engine as unicorn.but less milage comp 2 unicorn.pulsar is waste bike…it is just temporary stylise.cbz extreme is best of all bikes,perfect in handling and controlling bike even in 100-110 speed.but milage is some wat less comparing 2 unicorn and pulsar

Guys its all crap all that matters a lot is the way u ride…. well guys i am a street racer and no bike yet defeted me on streets i own a Pulsar 150 cc thats 4 years old. So learn to Ride well and u will be a winner. All the best. Ya 1 more point maintain ur bike (change oil every month) use Castrol Magnetec and use Irridium Spar Plugs and ur bike will be rocking no matter what bike u all use.

of all 150cc bikes pulsar150cc is the best….because i have reason for each one of them ..apache looks excellent but at speed 60-70 it starts vibrating & it looks good for short and low personality people ..cbz extreme looks awesome but mileage matters after 1 yr …unicorn is excellent in terms of mileage but look is not so good (avg mileage is 50)..hunk looks excellent from side view but from front & back it looks slim and other things mileage ,pick up are good,its engine sound is also low as unicorn….so therefore pulsar 150 is best in all fields but the only thing is that it is common on road.

My vote goes for unicorn in quality,handling,fuel efficiency,racing n ripping,pickup and at best its thin and ligt weigth long,tall and sporty look.Only thing it needs is upgradation to led lamps,dgtal instruments,and gas suspension..I have unfortunately a 2nd hand bajaj pulsar 150cc. Any of You guys thinking of not being thrown off road if a Truck Passes by use the HUNK.. But bet you change the rear tyre asap.. The zapper skids in rains..Muscles do matter.. I have a silver Hunk and am very happy with the performance.. have done 110 kph with my girlfriend riding pillion.. Ride the hunk for a few days.. You wont like to besaddle any other Monster..The ride position is Excellent as is the mileage in this sector of bikes. The new Yamahas are good too..Want stability and if You are not the kind who pops wheelies the HUnk is the best bet….

Pulsar 150 cc and 180 CC have a very small rate margin and the shape and performance is really good for 180.
RTR has come with poor engineering. It vibrates a lot when compared with a pulsar 150

Hi dude, i have an RX100 and planing to buy a new 150CC bike which will have sufficient power and good mileage and i frequently go for long drive of 400 to 500KMs. Please suggest will have atleast the power and grip as RX100 has with better mileage.

People are mostly wrong when they say that Unicorn is only for older people.
Unicorn is a tall bike, maybe only Suzuki GS150R can match it in height. The front portion is taller than Pulsar or Apache, and the rear portion is taller than most bikes. It’s like being seated on a high state horse.
When I travel on the bike, I look sexier. Many friends have told me that. Unicorn also brings in a very fresh look, friendly not aggressive. Most people are now bored by Pulsar – because every second person has a Pulsar.
Of course, for those with racing instincts Unicorn is not for you. Have you ever wondered by many buy Bullets and Thunderbirds (both Royal Enfield) ? Driving pleasure is also an important part of biking. Unicorn guarantees total driving pleasure.

All these bikes great and powerful and looks very attractive wonder of amazing engineering . we can see that all bikes of Yamaha bikes is very powerful , stylish , sexy macho and big looking in all 125cc to 250cc bikes. So sir I request you pls. think about my letter and all bikes pls. launch in India soon.
(1)YZF R125 à yes –its right choice
This bike is very sporty and sexier than other 125 cc segment. Best bike for India in 125cc class. R125 is king of kings.
Note-
pls. give a suitable price. Yamaha should make own – aim should – sports bike for everyone {otherhand as tata did true dream for of car -the people car Nano } . pls. launch this bike for India and true this dream for people.
(2) YZF-R15à very nice bike and powerful than other 150cc bikes. R15 did change the climate of 150 cc bikes segment .other bikes maker are thinking and says each other . what is this? We were not think in dream – Yamaha will do this also.
Pls. do some improvement in r15 according to peoples.

(3.) Gladiator 165 cc à mixture of sport, naked and so street bike look. Here all people can see Yamaha gladiator 165 cc bike is very different engineering than other 150 to 180 cc bikes. This bike is prove that gladiator 165 make for India .its look very amazing so different style than others, eye catching cowl ,under -seat- exhust, today (no any bike maker use this technique ) beside Yamaha .
Gladiator 165 shows have many features than other bikes.
its 165 cc engine with (YTPS) good air cooled, shock absourer shockers ,wide tyres ,sporty handlebar, aluminium (light weight) stylish chasie and many much more than others 150 cc bikes.
pls. IYM launch this bike in India and introduce to people.
(4.) Scorpio 250cc fox-edition à sir very good bike in 250 cc air cooled bikes. Its look very stylish and heart touch. Iym pls. set a engine of 150 or 200cc in scorpio -fox –edition and launch in India.
Hey. Great bike maker Yamaha. Show your power and shows to all bike maker that Yamaha is a bike world .till pls. welcome iym come with scorpio –fox-edition in 150 or 200cc bike.
(5.) Dirt bikeà (make all accoseries throw IYM)till price should suitable.iym should make 125 to 150 cc dirt bike for in India. Like WR-125 , vixion -150 ,TTR 125, YZ-125. Yamaha’s dirt bike is very popular around the world and open a new chapter of dirt bike in India n show your technologies to people.
(6.) for broadcast = make dvd’s.
1= in dvd’s yamaha’s plant , forn bike about yamaha ,yamaha’s history, yamaha’s present models and important tips for custemers.
1 cap ,1 t-shirt 1.yamaha calander and one this video dvd = all item should free every yamaha’s model. Till everywhere

haiiii guys…..i knw all of them r like there own bikes and there efficiency….i read all the articles,but no one s discussed about “KARIZMA”..Its a wonderfull bike yarr both for race and show….i have the KARIZMA i knw it well.
pulser need very heavy maintainance it makes this bike very costly like r15

Unicorn is the best in riding comfort and also in mileage……. if maintained properly it gives a constant mileage of 55 to 59 kmpl
Note my no 9990223222 and come to race on expressway if you suggesting any other byke except pullsar.i have 200cc. Whether you have karizma 225 or appache. Bakchodi mat karo
will cbz xtreme be a better choice in 150 segment as i m 6feet tall?

ALL LISTEN CBZ XTREME IS THE BEST .if u have any doubt take a ride and decide urselfff……………………………………………………u will feel like sitting in a kingdom and u will get milage around 50 – 55…in .pick up no yamaha FZ or unicorn or pulsar will come near to it…………………..again if u dont want that bike just get lost u dont deserve it ………..

Guys am sorry to say pulsar sucks not much pick up compared to other bikes and bad handling
i actually like pulsar before but after two accidents really i have to search for handling in that bike while i have faced head on with a jeep in unicorn and slid away from the jeep in a nick of time….
extreme has good handling but its stiff the bike never moves with you and rtr has good handling and hunk is a bit heavy but still has good handling the mechanic saw the devil sitting behind in hunk during the test drive….
the bike i would go for are
1. Unicorn(Mileage this is india)
2. Hunk (Bit of style and engine as unicorn)
3. RTR (Style and handling)
4. xtreme (stiff and less stylish)
5. pulsar (Am never thinking of this again)
my cbz xtreme can fuck the all bikes…….

hunk is a great bike.smooth engine,gud in style.
suits for all ages.but u should race hunk from the 1st gare then it will cross 115-120,but not so gud in 5th gare to race with somebody.
if u race with (any bike of 150 cc segment) from the starting,than hunk can defeat all bikes like pulsar,fz..
in starting pulsar/fg might overtake you but after sometime u can easily defeat others..
i have hunk,but new hunk with atft engine is a very faadu bike.if any body want to race with me than u r very welcome……

hey guyzzzzzz all d bikes r good in their class.bt d 1 i like is d cbzzzzzz x treme. with a pick up of 0-6o km in 5 sec and smooth riding it is d clear winner in 150 cc bikes. it has d best handling. pulsar is good bt it’s front part is a little heavy which makes its worst handling so CBZ is d best!!!

xtream is best bcoz of greater torque rate(i’ve reached 9500 rpm in 2nd gear) and cornering. even 220 bikes can’t beat it in sprint race. It’s my own experience. I have honda unicorn… it’s an old school design… good if you want milage….. but can’t give a thrill.

Honda unicorn is the best bike in 150cc range bcoz it has such a well balanced engine which no other bikes have..! Its the smoothest bike, no vibrations to the handle bar even if u are riding in a top speed..!

hey, u fool did you ride your bike for 10 years .if .no how you come to decide pulsar is good . practically the pulsar engine isn’t good as unicorn in many aspects and also in comfort! when i talk about digital speedometer even benz cars haven’t digital the analog is looks spoorty so. unicorn is best in all points , if don,t ride go ride once in your life dont fall for bikes looks & speed enjoy the quality

Hi Guyz…..I agree that all d bikes in this segment are best in their own terms….but if u compare overall performance by keeping in mind all the factors…I think UNICORN will score at the top…I agree it lacks looks but now CB Unicorn model which I purchased week ago is the best horse from Honda stable I can say…..Really guyz, if u want to go for short joy go for Pulsar…if u r looking for best performance bike for long term with great ridin pleasure, den dont even give a second thought….close ur eyes and Go for UNICORN in BLACK….really a peace of Mind vehicle….Love u my black beauty….
