GM to build Volt in Detroit

General Motors has made sure that at its Hamtramck plant in Detroit it will make its imminent Chevrolet Volt.

In the spring, the production of prototype vehicles is anticipated to begin with complete production starting later in the year 2010.

Adding, GM Company will make the Volt on Hamtramck’s existing production line while other components, including its lithium ion batteries, will be made at other GM sites in the US.

The Detroit-Hamtramck plant is anticipated to be the first facility in the US owned by a foremost auto producer to make an electric car, said Jon Lauckner, GM vice president of global product planning.

Moreover, the electric vehicle development is making a complete new industry. The battery developers, builders of home and commercial charging stations, and power control and electric motor suppliers are included.

As Vauxhall/Opel Amperas, the European-spec Volts will at the start be made at Hamtramck, before production moves to a European site.

Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant is one of the leading contenders for Ampera production, said new CEO of Opel.
