Hear the voice of your as it grew up it shows some little warnings that urges you to pay attention towards it. Mere negligence may end up with disastrous results. Well, then it is time for the automotive enlightenment so keep your eyes for all the warning signs if not then there is a chance for your car to bid adieu.
Cars come with all sorts of warnings and it will notify almost everything that can possibly go wrong so it is a curfew! In order to keep your car trouble free just read on the following tips,
Seat Belt:
Seat Belt secures the occupant of a vehicle against harmful movement so that it may prevent you from sudden stop or collision. Seat belts are intended to reduce injuries and prevent the passenger from being thrown from the vehicle.
Some cars even give an audible warning to remind the driver and passengers. Seat belts also absorb energy by being designed to stretch during an impact, so that there is less speed differential between the passenger’s body and their vehicle interior, and also to spread the loading of impact on the passenger’s body.
Air Bag:
Air Bag is a flexible envelope that designed to protect the occupants from collision and striking to the interior objects like steering wheel or window. It is a safety cushion for automotive use and the lamp will come on at the time of ignition being turned on and go off after a couple of seconds.
Check it out whether the lamp comes on otherwise th system may be faulty and the air bag does not deploy in the event of an accident. So it is obvious that the car has to be inspected at the authorized workshop.
Some automakers (such as Mercedes-Benz) call for the replacement of undeployed airbags after a certain period of time to ensure their reliability in an accident.
Oil Level warning:
If the lamp glows when the engine is running switch off the engine and wait for few minutes. Check the oil levels using dip stick because driving with low engine oil levels can damage it. Perform oil analysis and track the color and viscosity of the oil. If low, engine oil level should be topped with the recommended grade.
Replacing the oil filter every time the oil is changed is highly recommended phenomenon. Check car owner’s manual for suggested maintenance interval. Correct levels of transmission fluid or gear oil and brake fluid should be checked and maintained.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS):
ABS is a safety system which prevents the wheels on a motor vehicle from locking up (or ceasing to rotate) while braking. While ABS offers improved vehicle control, and may decrease stopping distances on dry and especially slippery surfaces, it can also increase braking distance on loose surfaces such as snow and gravel.
It reduces the risk of multiple vehicle crashes and run-off road crashes. The lamp comes on every time if the ignition is switched on. If it doesn’t come on the time of start up or doesn’t go off after start up then there is a problem with ABS of the car.
If the lamp gets on when the car is in motion, it is the sign of a problem. Although the vehicle can still be braked but the ABS may not work.
Temperature:
When temperature light glows on a move then it means that the coolant temperature is too high or too low. As soon as you notice it, stop the car to get cool down .Do not open the radiator cap as it is hot it may cause injury.
Improper maintenance will lead the engine to get meltdown. Any cooling system hose that is cracked, and feels hard or spongy when squeezed must be replaced immediately. Fan belt has a vital role in cooling the engine. So make sure that it is working properly.
If large amounts of white smoke emanating from the exhaust, you could have a problem with your head gasket. Check out the coolant levels for any leak and top up to recommended levels.
Handbrake Warning
When the handbrake oil is low then it is a threat for safety. The light glows on when the handbrake is not engaged. This could result because of a leak in brake lines or from the fluid being used up over time. Get the fluid level checked and top it up as soon as possible as the braking performance can get affected which in turn affects safety.
Washer Fluid
Replace the plain water with washer fluid because these cleaning fluids leave the windscreen clean and prevent the settling of dust and grime. Don’t wait for washer fluid to run out. When the fluid level falls then the lamp indicates it.
So keep the fluid topped as driving with a dirty wind screen can be dangerous as it reduces visibility, especially during the bight.
Engine Warning
There are two modes of check engine light illumination, the first is the light will come on for a short time then go off. This mode means there is a problem that is considered “minor”. The next mode is the light stays on continuously. This means a minor problem has been allowed to continue for an extended amount of time or the problem is more serious and needs attention sooner than later. Most check engine light locations are somewhere in the instrument cluster panel in a place that is easily visible. So if the light continues to blink then the car has to be inspected by the authorized dealer.
Steering:
Power steering assists the driver of an automobile in steering by directing a portion of the vehicle’s power to traverse the axis of one or more of the road wheels. Almost all cars today come equipped with a power steering option. They reduce the driving effect by providing the torque to move the wheels.
Power steering failure occurs a hydraulic pipe breaks or is cut by debris from the road. It’s probable that the steering would gradually become heavier, thus giving a warning. Breakage of mechanical linkage and engine cut are the main factors. So fixing the fault is necessary as it requires lot more effort to steer the car.
Fuel Warning:
If the fuel is low then the fuel warning lamp comes up indicating that the car is now functioning in reserve mode. Car comes with a fuel gauge and the warning lamp only supplements the gauge. Though the car goes or a fair distance in a reserved mode it is advisable to get the car tanked up at the earliestto avoid running out of fuel with no pimp in sight.
Glow Plug:
Glow Plug is a starting heating device used to start up the diesel engines. The heat caused by the engine’s combustion, when combined with the heat from being electrified, is destructive to the glow plugs; the overheating can easily cause them to burn out.
The heat a glow plug produces diminishes over time; this causes the engine to become progressively harder to start in cold weather; however glow plugs are inexpensive and easy to replace. Glow plug failure is due to engine mismanagement.
Air pressure:
The air pressure monitoring system measures the rolling circumference and rotational speed of each wheel. If the rolling circumference changes then the lamp will glow. This can be because of low air pressure in them or one axle being more heavily loaded or if the tyre has been damaged.
Inaccurate tire pressure can cause poor gas mileage, uneven tire wear, or a tire blow-out. To prevent these events from happening it is important to maintain proper tire pressure.
Press brake auto:
For a car equipped with an automatic transmission, the brake should be pressed to put the transmissions in D mode. This is a safety measure as it prevents the accidental engagement of th gear box with the engine running. The lamp glows to warn the driver to depress the brake pedal if he wishes to engage the gear box.
Alternator:
Battery light does not go out and if it comes up while driving that means that the battery is not being charged by the alternator. Take the car immediately to the service centre as soon as possible and avoid the use of electric equipment as the battery will drain as its not being charged. It can also be caused by the wiring going to earth before reaching it.
ESP:
The light will glow when ignition is switched on; it also switched on when the electronic stability program is in action. The system takes inputs like the steering wheel angle and road speed to calculate where the driver wants to go and where the car is actually going. The light stays on as a warning that the system has been turned off.
Other Signs:
Service – Most of the modern cars remind you about the service due as most car owners tend toget their car serviced in time.
Doors open:
Make sure that all doors are shut as it is not the best practice to drive. The door-ajar warning comes up when a door is not properly shut. Some cars even tell you which door is not properly shut. Warning can also be provided if the Hood is open or boot is not shut.
Hazards:
Switch on hazard lights to indicate emergency and it is also a warning sign to the other drivers on the road coming in your direction.
Cruise Control:
It allows the car to maintain constant speed without the need to keep the right foot on the accelerator
Fog Lamps:
It is meant to light up the road edges in poor visibility. Fog lamps light up the road and have minimum upward spread. Switch them on if visibility spreads.
