Toyota LandCruiser Test Drive & Review
What would you say to a V6, with nearly 240 bhp under the hood capable of some serious off roading? ‘Not in India’? Well Toyota is here to prove you wrong with the new Prado. The giant has landed in India and is being sought by the who’s who of India. The super rich can’t wait to get their hands on this set of wheels which has a cult following of its own.
When it comes to the Prado’s looks, big is the word. The toothy and angry grill, contemporarily styled headlights and the chunky armour merely attenuate its size. The huge wheels are spot on. Step inside and the car looks even bigger. But everything in the interiors is top class. There is not a bit of incongruence in the whole theme.
Under the big hood is a big 4 liter V6 petrol engine. The infinite variable valve timing has become standard across all Toyota models. The engine produces 236 bhp and 362 Nm torque, which is essential for a car this size.
But as is expected, the mileage was not to be expected. Even for a car this size, only about 30 or 40% power will be utilized if no serious off roading is undertaken.
Ride and Handling:
The car comes in two drive modes, comfort and sport. Toyota’s Electronic Modulated Air Suspension turns the double wishbone at the front and multi link at the rear hard and reduces body roll in the Sport mode.
Toyota also offers Hill Descent Control and down hill assist control, telling us that this car is not meant to be driven on the tarmac alone.
The huge individual seats are very comfortable, except for the 7th seat which is a little cramped. The suspensions and sheer weight of the car along with the huge 17 inch tires iron out most pot holes. Few bumps which do produce a slight discomfort can be negotiated effortlessly in the Sport mode.
Dual stage SRS air bags, curtain and side air bags, pretensioner, whiplash injury prevention are some of the latest state of the art safety features in the car. Standard technologies like ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, 3 point seatbelts in the rear, which are expected in cars this expensive, is also present.
The Prado in all its glory has a single fault, price. Logically a car this big, with all the features for off roading has to be expensive and expensive cars are seldom driven irresponsibly off the road (if you’re not an automobile journalist). What is the logic behind buying a 40 lakh car, if it takes a Herculean effort just to park it? Let’s hope Toyota has figured that out.

Toyota LandCruiser Owner Review
I was looking for a mean SUV as my first car. It took so long to realize the dream that I didn’t even know what I was looking for specifically. So after a word of advice from my friend I ended up owning a Prado, and guess what I had fulfilled my dream completely. It has 235 bhp delivered from a smooth and refined petrol. I get to the ton mark under 6 seconds and I look down upon all the cars on the road. After long and last the Prado has become my first car.
