Tata Indigo Marina Test Drive & Review
The Tata Indigo Mariner is Tata’s second attempt at the estate segment. With competitive pricing and easily available parts the Tatas have come up with an Indigo look alike if only from the front.
There is very little change in the Marino’s looks compared to that of the Indigo. The obviously large boot is one. The lack pillars on the boot and the tall tail lamps make it quite a looker. From the front if not for the roof rails the Marino would have looked just like the Indigo. Interiors are a mix of the Indica and Indigo, except the dials which have a classy chrome finish. The design of the console though is lacking.
The Marino has an option of either petrol or diesel engine both having a capacity of 1.4 liters. The diesel manages to put 62 bhp on the tarmac with the ton mark coming up much after 15 seconds pass. The mileage though is impressive with 11.5 kpl in the city and 15 kpl in the highway. The initial turbo lag is a little frustrating. The petrol engine does not suffer this shortcoming and with 86bhp on the call rushes to the ton mark by the 12th second. Unfortunately this engine manages just around 8.5kpl in the city.
Ride and Handling:
The all independent suspension with a stiffer rear is a boon for heavy rides. But the understeer is pronounced and so is the body roll. The brakes are good enough but tend to skid the vehicle often. Anti lock Braking System would have been of good help. The gearshift is noisy and lacks feel.
The front seats’ adjustment is limited but sufficient. This has immensely increased the rear seat space. Three adults can sit comfortably in the back seats of the Marino. But bumpy roads unsettle the car easily. The lip at the rear is too high for easy loading. Pockets for knick knacks, a net in the boot and a folding parcel box are useful additions.
ABS is not even available as an option in the Marino. The price range of the car clearly illustrates its functionality and practicality. Seat belts and central locking are available.
The Indigo Marino is offered as a comfortable alternative to a hatchback. In India where big families are common this can work wonders. But the segment has not proved successful to all the earlier attempts by other automobile companies as well and there is very little reason to change.
