Skoda Fabia Test Drive and Review
Introduction Skoda as it claims, they are first manufacturer to create a new segment called superhatch few years back. But the Fabia which was launched with huge built-up bombed at the market due to its expensive price tag. On the contrary, Volkswagen the parent group of skoda surprised and succeeded with its Polo due to its competitive pricing. After learning lesson from its parent group, Skoda has come back with an all new Fabia and rational pricing. Can Skoda make the cut this time? Can Fabia take on the mighty competitors like Hyundai i20, Nissan Micra and Volkswagen Polo. We bring you an exclusive test drive on all new Fabia. Here is the review.
Styling and Engineering Skoda Fabia styling is everyone's favourite. Now Skoda has given a facelift with a new radiator grille and 3D headlamps. The new Fabia also gets elongated fog lamps and two prominent ridges from grille to the windshield. These changes highlights the horizontal surface and make the Fabia more wider and expressive. The side and rear profile of Fabia are left untouched.
Engine Gone are the 1.4L gasoline and 1.4L TDI engine, Fabia gets 1200cc gasoline and oil burner mills. The new engines are nothing but the same engines used in Volkswagen polo. The 1.2L petrol engine under the new Fabia develops 75bhp and 110Nm. The 1.2L TDI generates equal amount of power and 180Nm of peak torque at 2000rpm. For auto enthusiast, Skoda is offering a powerful 1.6L petrol engine developing 105bhp. The engines are coupled with 5-speed manual transmission
Performance and Mileage Our test drive Fabia runs on diesel. The new engine generates 7bhp more than the pumpe deuse motor used in earlier fabia. Switch on the ignition, the distinct diesel clatter is audible inside the cabin too. It is not irritating also it smoothens out as you move. You could feel the discernible turbo lag before 1800rpm but the surge starts from 2000rpm and doesn't let up to 5000rpm. The wider powerband ensures Fabia demand lesser downshifting. On the highway, the new fabia TDI could be your best companion. However, the engine is not rev friendly and will not suit for traffic signal races.
Interiors On the inside, Fabia gets ivory fabric upholstery, chrome decor and chrome surround for instrument panel. Build quality is typically skoda. Switch on the A/C, it cools the cabin imminently. But sadly, there is no option of climate control in this luxurious super hatch. The elaborate reading lights at the front and rear are good. The reminiscent of sunroof controls are still there though skoda is no more selling Fabia with sunroof.. Over the years, Skoda has toned down the interiors of Fabia to be cost competitive. However the versatility remains, like the boot space and rear seat. The boot has a two step parcel tray and the rear seat can folded flat (by moving the rear seat base down you can flat the backrest )
Ride and Handling Fabia retains the same suspension set-up and tyres. Fabia features the perfect blend of handling and ride characteristics. The wider track gives you the planted feel even while hard cornering. The composure of chassis and solidness of steering will amaze even if you are a race car driver. The bad thing it never thrills you, blame the larger 175/65 tyres and 1152kg kerb weight. We drove the car over harsh conditions where Fabia may never come across. Yet the car never unsettles and the ride remains flat.
Features Skoda has rationalised the Fabia variants (product content has completely changed). Each variant of Fabia is added/deleted one or other feature. The good thing with the change is driver Airbag which is made standard. Other features of Fabia includes front and rear fog lamps, passenger airbag, ABS, height adjustable driver seat, integrated music player and multifunction display.
Variants and Price Fabia comes in three variants - classic, elegance and ambiente with three engine options. Fabia petrol is priced between Rs4.35 lakhs and Rs5.99 lakhs. The price of Fabia diesel is betweenRs5.40lakhs and Rs6.69lakhs. On the road, Fabia elegance we test drove costs Rs7.75lakhs which is Rs1.15 lakhs less than its predecessor. For the reduction in money, the new Fabia lacks reverse parking sensor, driver arm rest, 60:40 foldable seat, A/C glovebox and rear washer/wiper.
Good and Bad Bits Good Bits
The previous Fabia has two major irritants - engine and price. Skoda has sorted out these two issues by a decent margin. The new engines may not be best-in-class yet offers decent performance and mileage. The price reduction is sure to be great news for Fabia lovers. Overall, Skoda new fabia has become a serious contender in the highly competitive super hatch segment. But Skoda's target of tripling the fabia sales may demand much more than Skoda has served.
Skoda Fabia Test Drive & Review
Skoda Auto may or may not have tasted success with their models in India. But one thing is for sure; all the models have an image of being good examples of automobile engineering. Skoda has now launched the Fabia and opened up a brand new large hatchback’ category in the Indian automobile industry.
The Fabia is exquisitely designed and looks cute from all angles. The large headlights actually make the car cheeky. The inset passenger cabin and chrome plated grills make the car even more distinctive. The interiors are the Fabia are a treat and completely unexpected. The lavish quality and plethora of features are something we don’t expect in smaller cars nowadays.
The Skoda comes with a 1.2 liter and 1.4 liter petrol engine and a turbocharged 1.4 liter diesel engine. The smaller 1.2 liter engine produces 70 bhp and the larger petrol mill dishes out 86 bhp. The torque figures are 108 Nm at 3000 rpm and 132 Nm at 3800 rpm respectively. The diesel engine with an electronically controlled fuel injection (not common rail) gives 70 bhp and 155 Nm torque at 1600 rpm. The pronounced lag under 2000 rpm, despite the impressive performance ( 0 – 100 in 14 seconds and 14 kpl in city) make up a disappointing ride.
Ride and Handling:
Skoda has tuned the Macpherson struts with torsion stabilizers and suspensions for Indian conditions. The increased ground clearance is also well suited for Indian conditions. The tall and stiff springs, with a responsive steering make the Fabia very composed over potholes and bumps. The gear box is also well designed.
The passenger and driver of the Fabia are very happy people. The luxurious seats with ample legroom are new to hatchbacks in India. The console reports time, outdoor temperature, distance and time driven and instantaneous fuel consumption. Remote key less entry and power windows are other convenient features.
The Antilock Braking System, Motor Speed Regulator with Brake Assist and Engine Braking Control ensure that the Fabia stops where you want it to. Dual air bags are also new to hatchbacks in India.
The Fabia is a trendsetter of sorts with its stylish looks, state of the art technologies and safety features. If only the engine responded better, Skoda would have fared much better. But the comfortable interiors and exceptional safety guaranteed make the Fabia a potential winner.
Skoda Fabia User Reviews
Skoda Fabia Owner Review
I bought the Fabia last November. I think my car offers more exclusivity than the very common Swift. Though pricey the interiors are larger and offer more space. The engine is good and refined. I think the features offered in the car make it a must get. The mileage I get is 13 kpl which I think is great given how I ride it. Overall it is simply great.
